It seems like a lot of kiddies our age still think that $$$ is the ultimate path to happiness. We see Kim Kardashian and company have gigantic houses, seven million luxury cars, and a lifestyle that's the closest thing to perfection.

After medical school, doctors go into residency for a few hours and work for ~$50,000... and then the big bucks come. ~$150,000, with the chance you have a salary so high you become loaded.

People in my class were stating that money and reputation were the two main reasons why people want to become physicians (no matter what specialty), which is true, at least in my school. Then they went on to say that doctors are overpaid.

Agree or no?

And no, I'm not considering the profession purely because of the money

Not at all. Med school is like 60-80k/year. That’s not easy to recover from, even for doctors. Becoming a doctor is an investment; long term gratification (money wise).

Who shouldn’t be rewarded for 11-14 years of school/tough work? (4 years undergrad, 4 years medical school, 2-3 residency working insane hours with no sleep, and an optional 2-4 years specialty training which most doctors go through)

Definitely not overpaid. Want to know who’s overpaid? Athletes, movie stars, and reality tv people like Kim kardashian. Doctors do so much more than any other profession in my opinion

I really don’t think that athletes are overpaid. They create millions of dollars in revenue, so it’s only right that they get a fair share of that. It’s the same thing with movie stars, it’s all about supply and demand. These are the people who are the best of the best at what they do, so they’re going to get a lot of money for it.

Alright here’s my take on this issue, seeing that my father is a doctor I believe I have a good grasp on it. First off are doctor’s overpaid? Hell no, sure they live a very comfortable life. But they deserve it, and its hard to know what being a doctor is really like without a personal connection to one, tv shows like “scrubs”, “greys anatomy”, and others romanticize being a doctor and its nothing like the real thing. Doctors earn their pay every day, first they go to medical school, which is no easy feat. Then residency, which is hell, literally working your ass off for a couple of years. And then you need to stay well versed on all your knowledge because peoples lives depend on it daily. If you think about it doctor’s don’t really start life till around 30 when they go into the real field of medicine, meanwhile their buddies not in medicine have started a life and have begun making a true salary. Also the 50 grand a year during residency is not accurate. Then there are school loans, which if the doctor’s parents didn’t help them out with will follow them around forever, my father still has a large percentage of his loans to pay off and he has constantly been chipping away at them. And finally about the reputation and glamor of being a doctor, it doesn’t exist. Most people who go into college thinking they will become a doctor for those reasons are some of the many that will drop out of med school or realize its not the right path for them. To become a doctor you truly have to be doing it for the right reasons, its hard work. Every day you need to be on the top of your game, its expected from you. No mistakes are tolerated. Sorry for the rant. Read it or not that’s my 0.02$.

I pretty much agree with jonezi’s statements. My mother is a doctor and time and time again she reminds me that the t.v. depiction of doctors is false. It takes doctors many years to pay of debt, working in a hospital is hell, and often she found herself questioning why she is doing this. furthermore, my mother has shared with me that many of her friends who were going into medicine for the money eventually dropped out before medical school and switched to other majors. I would say dentists have a higher proportion of those who “do it for the money”(but that’s just my opinion). Business major’s are the ones who are better off in the long run(again, my opinion)

People who are more liberal will argue that doctors are overpaid and that their is sort of a trust/monopoly with health care, which should be free etc. and people who support free-market economy will think doctors deserve what they earn.

I looked at some of my dads med school books. It’s a lot, and from what I read the four years of med school and (especially) the additional years of residency are hell.

I would also have fear of holding someones life in my hands.

Hey all, I posted in this thread a few days ago then forgot about it. I just came back and read some of the recent comments, I’m very relieved/glad that I got some positive feedback on my massive comment. I thought for sure I was just going to be bashed, anyway just stopping by.

Actors and reality t.v stars are insanely overpaid. They get paid millions of dollars for essentially no hard work on their part, compared to the working class of america. and a lot of them are idiots too…
