DODMERB Med His.

Hey I'm filling out the medical history. I got to the back pain question. If I went to physical therapy for a week for back spasms because of football, should I mark "yes" for it? Also, should I mark "consulted or treated by a specialist for something other than a minor illness" (getting physical therapy, getting x-rays). Would it look sketchy if I have 3 varsity letters and no back pain/consulted a specialist? Not chronic problems.

For the best advice go to this website: http://serviceacademyforums.com/ and scroll down to the "Dodmerb" forum. Post your questions there. They will be answered by a retired Navy Corpsman who used to work at Dodmerb.

Here is my experience for what its worth. My son had a sore back from football too (no chronic problems either). I told him to go to the chiropractor for an adjustment and he would feel better faster. On his medical history he marked yes to the back pain question and received a disqualification from Dodmerb for this. We had to send in copies of his chiropractic records and a personal statement saying he has no problems with his back and can do all activities. It took awhile but eventually this was waivered by both AROTC and USMA.

Good luck.

so should I just not put it down if it will cause so many problems? Also, could a chiropractor could be seen as the reason for the DQ, while a physical therapist might look more legitimate to the DOD.

Nobody can tell you what to put on your form. You are required to be honest. If you are not, and DoDMERB calls for your records later, you could have problems. You may want to call DoDMERB directly and ask them if you are unsure.
Overcoming DoDMERB hurdles can be a long and tedious process - start early and follow their directions.
If you know you have "red flags" in your history, get reports from your doctors now so that they are available when you need them.
Good luck.

I agree with Ann, be honest and start early.

I don't think it was chiropractor vs. physical therapist that got him the disqualification, I think it was the yes answer. Dodmerb has guidelines on what is/is not a DQ. So if you do mark yes, get copies of all your medical records relating to the incident. Then you will be able to send them in quickly if Dodmerb requests them. If you get a DQ don't panic. USMA automatically considers you for a waiver. If the rest of your application is strong they will take a look at the medical issue and either grant a waiver or not.

Another thing, keep copies of everything you mail to Dodmerb. If something gets lost in the mail you can make another copy to send them.
