Does a GED hurt my chances?

So I’m supposed to enter my senior year of high school this fall. Until now, I’ve lived at home in a traumatic/abusive situation (not caused by parents or anything… it’s complicated), but I can’t do it for another year. I’ve been diagnosed with PTSD and it’s unsafe+unhealthy for me to live there any longer, which has taken a lot for me to realize. The problem is, I have another year of school left, and my parents are unable to afford/unwilling to support me living anywhere but at home. I’m going to have to find a way to support myself/find somewhere to stay next year, which will require me to have a job. It would actually be cheaper for me to travel next year, because my grandparents left behind money for me to travel (can’t use it for rent-- already asked) and most of my relatives who would let me stay live in different countries, and rent is EXPENSIVE where I live. SOOOOO… an option for me would be to take the GED at the end of this summer, and go live/work in a more affordable place. However, I really want to go to a good college, and I’m worried not finishing high school the traditional way would lessen my chances. I’ve done well in high school (3.8 UW GPA, 4.2 W), but would all that go to waste if I don’t complete all 4 years? Should I try to stay in school and support myself at home? I know this is a complicated situation to understand, but I would appreciate any advice.

If it’s truly unsafe for you to live at home, you have to leave, and da** the consequences.

Whether or not the GED will impact your chances at a uni - that depends, to be honest, on how well you do on the GED, how well you do on the SAT/ACT, and - depending on the college - on you taking things like SAT II subject tests, and how you use your essay.

Actually, would you like to go to college this fall? If so, then I’d have you look at Simon’s Rock immediately:

They’re an early college. They’d accept you just as you are now. No GED. No need to return to HS next year. You can get your associates there then transfer. They’re really interesting. And quite strong. You could transfer to a strong school out of Simon’s Rock. Seriously, this is an option: https://simons-rock.edu/why-simons-rock/index-1.php
