My orientation is Aug 2-4 (which I believe is the last date). I thought I heard from Umich representatives that you should still be able to get your classes even if you register late. One of the classes I am interested in is Calc 2. When I look at the lsa course guide online, I see classes with 5 or less openings. I am aware that engineers have certain first year requirements, such as the computer programming class. Therefore, wouldn't I be guaranteed a spot in these kinds of classes?

I am an engineering student entering with AP credit for Calculus 1, Chemistry, and social studies classes.

They usually save some spots in intro classes for incoming Freshmen but even if a class is full it’s really easy to get an override if you’re absolutely required to get into a class. I was 37th on the waitlist for a required class I was trying to get into last semester. I sent an e-mail to the course’s department and 15 minutes later I had an override. Also if classes fill up they just make more sections (they did this for my Circuits class; every lab was full on my day to schedule).

Earlier is always better than later but some departments try to hold space open for those with later orientations. They have been open spaces in Math throughout the summer and I think they create new sections if they need to. Some classes fill up and you need to waitlist or try to get an override but there should be enough of something good to take. You may not get the premium times.

i had orientation last week. Econ and Psych were completely booked. I was lucky to fit into anthro 101. However, they do make more seats available for common freshman classes: Math 115 and Bio 171 are examples.

I just went to orientation last week as well, and 2 of the 4 intro poly-sci courses were booked to the max, physc 101 was booked, and all the time slots I got into only had 1/2 seats left. From what I found it doesn’t affect the availability of classes as much as all the good courses/good electives are completely full, and the best professors are full. That was at my orientation anyway.

For engineering 100 and 101 they only release a few seats at a time, which is why it’s actually better to be a somewhat late registration than one of the first registrations.

For LSA in a class like 116 they’ll give you an override. There are plenty of seats open in Physics 140. If you’re thinking of a major where you need to take Econ, there are plenty of seats in Econ 102 open.

Blue everyone I’ve seen is taking a full 15 Credit hours and is in UROP on the side. If you’re in Chem and Calc (or Physics) the first semester though, taking only 12 Credit hours may be wise (this is all from what I’ve heard from my peer-adviser).
