Does a low Junior year semester 1 gpa look bad if you improve in all your classes the next semester

My son has a pretty good GPA from both hisfreshman and sophomore year. A 3.8 unweighted GPA his freshman year and a 4.4 Weighted GPA his sophomore year, but his first semester of his Junior he unfortunately dropped to a 4.0 Weighted GPA because of constantly being sick, and some hospital trips. However if he were to get all A’s next semester ( a 4.6 Weighted GPA ) would the lower grades from his first semester look pretty bad still.

His classes consist of rigorous AP’s and he has only received A’s or B’s never lower.

Along with this, I was wondering if getting 4 B’s his 1st semester of Junior would hurt his chances at a top tier school even if they were AP courses and if he were to get all A’s the following semester?

First, there is nothing wrong with a 4.0. And if there were extenuating circumstances you might ask the guidance counselor to address them in your son’s recommendation.

Second, you should check with your son’s guidance counselor to see how your HS does things, but most transcripts sent to college just have the final grade.

Finally, some unsolicited advice – please allow your son some breathing room, particularly given his rigorous schedule and recent illness. Even with perfect grades, perfect standardized tests etc. there is no guarantee of admission to the hyper-competitive schools. The good news is that with so many amazing colleges and universities out there, if continues to do well, he should have many wonderful college choices.
