Basically, I'm still in high school (currently a sophomore) and am investigating different majors that may interest me. I looked into a description for a psychology major and it seems very interesting. I realize that medical school really requires only certain pre-requisites, regardless of the major, but would I really benefit from majoring in psychology if I want to become a physician in the future?

you’re a sophomore in high school. That is my answer to your question.

It is possible if you went into something that had overlap. Psychiatry, neurology, maybe public health and epidemiological stuff. It won’t hurt you.

You’re far too early to be worrying about this. Do well in HS while trying to have some fun…worry about your college major(s) in a few years.

lol, RJ.

medical school is-for u-a lifetime away. but, yes, majoring in psychology would be fine.

Don’t you just love how just about everybody pats you on the head and tells you to settle down instead of answering your questions?
Psychology is fine as an undergraduate major. Be aware, you will still have to take certain biology and chemistry courses to be prepared for med school. Also be aware that there are multiple paths to working in the field of human behavior. Psychiatrists are Medical Doctors who specialize in human behavior and therapy. Other paths involve getting graduate degrees in psychology, counseling, social work, or other similar fields. Talk to as many people as you can who are in the field, to see what your options are and which path you’d prefer.

My only reason for not answering the question is that there is a lot of time for the OP to change his/her mind before even getting to college not to mention the fact that many people change majors once or twice after they get to college. They take a few classes and decide that Pychology or Poli Sci or Biology really aren’t for them. I wasn’t trying to be patronizing…just trying to spread a little reason and calm to the often uber hysterical types that tend to frequent pre med forums.

The OP is a sophomore in HS for God’s sake…chill people…

I’d also point out that not some people did answer OP’s question…

OP… wait 'til college for this kind of question. You’re in HS… the above that have pointed that out are right.

That having been said, psych will give you helpful perspective for medicine and may help you in areas such as bedside manner, understanding your pts’ psychosocial needs, etc.

ANY major is good for premed. If you have nothing better to do this summer, take a Psych class at a local college. (I’m not a big fan of AP Psych, however.)
