Does a school counselor disclose if a student has depression or mental health issue to colleges?

I am just curious. Does counselor bound to report any mental health issue of a student to colleges the student is applying? Would this ruin a student’s chance?

They are not obligated to.

I would think going into specifics of any medical condition would be a serious violation of counselor-student confidentiality to mention this without the consent of the student. However, I suppose a GC could give vague/veiled references about suitability and potential

No, they are supposed to disclose items regarding your academics and extracurriculars, unless you’ve given them permission to disclose a medical condition which may explain gaps in attendance in your transcripts.

Right. They also can’t reveal disability information. Students should keep these issue in mind as they apply to college. If someone has had considerable support up to that point, then that is something that needs to be factored into the choice of college. Too often students figure everything will work out and don’t consider how their issues could impact on their life at college. But time and a half as an accommodation does not add time and a half to the 24 hours available to you. And, students with anxiety or depression won’t necessarily be free of their distress once they go to college. So choosing a nurturing college/environment makes sense for many students. Yet students are often drawn to the most competitive school they can get into, forgetting about the impact of things like mental health issues or learning issues.

It is probably a violation of something but you never know what they will say off the record.
