I'm applying to five schools, two of which are considered safeties, and three which reaches (they're technically high matches I'd say, but I don't want to get too comfortable).
The thing is I'm really worried about not being accepted into either of the two schools (two of the reaches) and I'll have to go to another college which I won't like as much.

I mean, I know if I do go to another college, it'll open up OTHER opportunities and life experiences and blah blah blah but fghskfsdfsdf WHAT IF IM REJECTED FROM ALL THE SCHOOLS?

So yeah, does anyone else stress like this?

I do all the time. Especially given the fact that I applied only to two schools EA (one of which is a safety and the other is my top choice), and I’ve yet to hear back makes me a little nervous. I don’t want to go into Christmas not having heard from anywhere.

Yep, the only school I applied EA is a pretty certain rejection, so I’ll be in limbo till April. Gah.

If you chose your safeties well, at least one of them flat-out guaranties you admission based on your stats, is completely affordable without any aid other than federal aid, guaranteed state aid, and or merit aid guaranteed by your stats, and also is a place you would be happy to attend if all else goes wrong. Which is to say if you chose your safeties well, you are already accepted or just waiting for the letter confirming that.

If your none of your safeties are truly, absolutely safe, then find one or start thinking about your Plan B. Maybe a gap year wouldn’t be all that bad.

D2 and her friends (HS seniors) will occasionally start in on this, “I’m not going to college!” whine while lounging around at school. She says teachers have overheard them, and immediately jump in with a lecture on why it is important to go to college. They then have to explain that they mean that they think no college will accept them (not that they don’t want to go). Teacher then rolls eyes and departs. Rinse and repeat with a new teacher every few days. And… they are all going to college for sure, somewhere.

If you aren’t happy with your safeties, look around a little more. D1 fell in love with her safety, got great merit aid, and went on to graduate Phi Beta Kappa and land a great job in the city she wanted to live in. It is generally harder to find a great safety or low match than reaches (that is why they are reaches – everyone wants to go there!). But they are out there. Get a copy of the Fiske Guide to Colleges and ■■■■■ for something strong in your area of study, in the size and location you want, and where your stats are above the top of the middle 50% range.

shabang, I assume you are working on some RD applications. My D2 did the same (EA at a top choice, EA at a safety). But she just submitted an RD application tonight, and is working on the next one that is due already.

I agree with intparent, find safeties that you would be fine attending, instead of attending just because you couldn’t get in anywhere else.
