I am a student from China and will enter U of Waterloo to pursue my PHD degree in theoretical physics. I also get offers from Stanford and UT Austin, but I declined both of them, due to the fact that Waterloo is extremly excellent at theoretical physics.

I would like to know whether Waterloo is a good school in the eyes of the Americans. If I graduate from Waterloo, how much the chance I can find a decent job in U.S.?
Thanks a lot.

I’m not sure how doctorate degrees from Canada are viewed in Academia, but funny enough my ex-fiance did her undergrad there and I learned that it actually has a very strong rep. It’s also amongst perhaps one of the best 3 schools in the country. That being said, I doubt you’ll have any problems related to the quality of the program itself.

And to be frank, I personally probably would have taken the Stanford deal given the reputation and opportunities provided after graduation.

U of Waterloo is a good university and is quite well known in Canada but not as well known in general in the U.S. which to be expected. However, people in the academia and high-tech business will know U of Waterloo for its strenght in math and science. Microsoft and Google hire ton of students from U of Waterloo because of the computer science program. The university have a very good reputation in math, computer science and engineering. I am not sure about their graduate program but I imagine there are probably pretty good. U of Waterloo is very modern and the campus is very beautiful. Good luck.

I’m surprised you would turn down Stanford for UW, but UW has a new theoretical physics institute headed by Stephen Hawking. So yes, UW is the place for this type of study.

how could you turn down Stanford over UW??

you mentioned you wanted to get a job in the US… then you should pick a good program in the US (instead of Canada), UT-A is also great school.

UW may rank higher than Stanford academically in that particular field… but then your plan should be going into academia… wrong decision wrong decision

First of all, PI is not headed by Hawking. He is a Distinguished Visitor. I agree with Zoo, UT and especially Stanford are probably more recognized in the United States. Who told you to go after Waterloo so hard?! I feel like you were given bad advice. Unless you want to do something like Quantum Information or Loop Quantum Gravity, I don’t understand why you would pick any school in Canada over Stanford.

My research interest focuses on quantum computing and cosmology. PI and IQC are significantly active in this areas. A friend of mine get Phd in Princeton and do his post doc in PI(waterloo) suggested me to accept the offer from waterloo.

This doesn’t matter now since you’ve already made your decision. You should have asked this question before you accepted the offer.

Waterloo may very well be the best place for your area; however, I feel as though you didn’t research it yourself and instead relied on the advice of someone who is already there.
