Does anyone know if there is a scholarship or grant that is spacifically for college text books? My daughter's school is covered but she needs assistance with her book costs. I know this sounds crazy but unless the scholarship states it is for books, she can't use it. So it would have to be for college text books.....HELP! Thanks a bunch!

I don't know of any -- but I know a few college kids who are really broke and can not buy all their text books at once.

What has worked for them is to go to the prof's office, explain the problem, and ask politely if it would be possible to borrow a book until they can buy one. Often profs will have extra textbooks.

Now, mind you, these are very disadvantaged kids, mostly on HEOP. They are given a $250 allowance for books, which, obviously doesn't cover them all.

Many scholarships specifically say the funds can be used for textbooks. Ask at your college's financial aid office whether your college has scholarships for textbooks or a list of such scholarships. Contact your high school to see if the counselors there know of any such scholarships for residents of your hometown.

Use used books whenever you can (look online through Amazon, Powell's, etc.; look on campus for web messages and paper messages about used books for sale). Consider sharing a textbook with someone in your dorm (cuts the price in half right there). Often, a professor will put a copy of a textbook on reserve and you can use it in the library to tide you over. Ask your professor whetherhe/she has a copy you can borrow for the semester (they often receive extra "promo" or review copies).

Sell all of your books at the end of each semester and recycle the funds to buy used books for the next semester.
