How did you keep in contact once your were out of their class but still a student at the college?

I kept in contact with many when I was in college and still keep in touch with one now that I’m out of college. We normally email back and forth 2 or so times a month and I’ll go back and visit him for lunch about once a semester.

I dine with one group of recent alumnae every month and see other alumni at least 2-3 times a semester. Many alums generally will pop into my office if they’re on campus, but that happens once or twice a year–it would be a bit of an imposition if it happened more often, as I have current students’ needs to attend to.

I have some current students (who may or not may not be enrolled in my classes) who are in my office 2-3 times a week, and I frequently chat with students at athletic events, before and after plays and performances, and during dinners that I host for my advisees, members of clubs and organizations that I advise, etc.

Then again, I teach at a very undergraduate-focused institution.

If you are at a more typical institution where professors are judged first on their research, then I think that a brief chat or email once every two weeks or so would be about right.

ETA: I just saw that you have two threads going on this topic–I think that HarvestMoon’s response in the other thread is a good one.
