Some people say that getting AP Awards (National AP Scholar, AP Scholar with distinction...) is not really significant. However, it is generally good to have a heavy course load, and taking many APs and getting high scores are good.

I was wondering AP has a really big impact on admission, especially for top colleges like HYPS.

no; they're too common

I second the above post, if your applying to ivies, its usually a must-have.

How about just "National AP Scholar"? It is pretty rare compared to AP scholar with honor or distinction. Does it help in admission process?

The awards themselves are just titles. There's really no point in mentioning them on your app because adcoms will be able to tell if you got one or not just my glancing at the amount of exams you took and your scores. It honestly won't make a difference since someone who took 3 APs and got 4s on all of them is synonymous with someone who has an AP scholar award.

As for National AP Scholars. The award is much more rare, but it still isn't a guarantee for admission. I know someone who took 16 APs and got 5s on all of them (don't look at me with those disbelieving eyes. I'm not lying). Not even he was accepted to Yale.

rockermcr--do u know the reason for why he was rejected from Yale? If u do, would u share w/ me?

I'm not sure, but I would guess that his ECs might not have been good enough (who has enough time for ECs with all those APs??), or his app didn't really reveal his personality. Good marks aren't any type of indicator when it comes to college admissions, especially with the Ivies. He goes to Johns Hopkins, though.

Nobody is just rejected from anywhere, especially HYP... There are many with much lower stats that get in, and beating their Intel Finalist, cancer curing genius competitors. I think that more than your stats, it is the general impression that you make in that admissions room that gets you in.

As for AP National scholar, go for it :). I think I've seen that less than 7,000 receive that distinction every year.
