Does AP US History exempt me from GE Cat1?

Hi all,

I took the AP for US History last year and got a 4 on the exam.

Right now, I'm taking "20th Century U.S. History" HIST-361 for a General Education requirement. It just came to my attention that AP scores might be able to exempt me from certain general education classes. I thought it was just Math and Science that could be exempted from.

Does AP US History exempt me from this class? Also, can someone direct me to a list of possible general education classes that could be exempted from with AP Credit?

Thanks in advance.

Nope, sorry! Here's the link: http://www.usc.edu/dept/ARR/articulation/apexams.html

If your an engineer, AP US History counts for Cat IV. :)

I still don't get how that makes sense. Using APUSH credit to fulfill a category filled w/ science classes....perhaps I'm just bitter...

because it's ridiculous for engineers to take a GE class in "science and technology"

would you want to take a science/technology class with a bunch of engineers who push up the curve? :)

The only AP exams that I know of that can place you out of GEs are AP Euro History, AP World History, AP Bio, AP Chem and AP Physics C (I think...) Practically all the other AP exams are on a case-by-case basis though you will get elective credit for them; you'll have to check with your specific department about AP Calc, AP Psychology, AP CompSci and the like.

Nope, i believe AP euro's the only one that'll help you get out of that cat (i didn't know AP world could do that... hmm interesting) and you have to have a 4 on the test.

i got 3 and everything else counted as an elective so it's pretty gay. I wish they would change it around here.. (my other choice university took pretty much all of my APs as GE credits... sigh)

Well you would think if an engineer could get credit for APUSH it would before Cat 1. And another major class could qualify for cat 4 (like the bio, chem, physics classes and cat 3). Not that I didn't like cat 4 (I took a neuroscience class) but it's always nice to have GE's out of the way.

inscrutable are the ways of the administration--can't see how US history = tech/science myself, but not sure why engineering majors would have to take MORE courses in science anyway, since so many are already required for engineers.
