Like, in terms of college admissions, it can't be that important. How much (or how little) weight does it hold with an admissions committee?

It depends on which colleges you are looking at. If you are looking at a top 20 school it means very little. However, if you set your sights only slightly lower it can mean a full ride or significant scholarship and presumably an admission advantage as well.

If you’re looking for a lot of FA, being a NMF can get you a 4-year free ride at Univ of Alabama and a near free ride at several other public schools such as Univ of Oklahoma. Do the research, study for and take the PSAT, follow thru on any remaining requirements for it such as taking the SAT.

Look in the NMF threads in the FA section on this site and you can get an idea on what is CURRENTLY available at many colleges for NMFs. (be aware it can change from year to year)
