Hi, im applying to Northeastern university in Boston for the Fall of 2011. Just wanted to know if being a vet could help your chances with the Admissions board? I was in the army for 5 years, 82nd Airborne Infantryman. Im currently at Rhode Island College and im applying as a transfer student to NEU. I currently have a 3.5 GPA with 47 credits.

Yes, definitely, being a veteran can help you substantially with admissions. Colleges appreciate your maturity, real-life experience, leadership and responsibility. Good luck with your transfer–with your good GPA, I’d predict success.

Hey thanks alot for the info Fauve, where are you going to school this year? Are you a vet also?

absolutely it helps, It was my number one selling point for getting into Amherst College

wow thats awesome mchellmer, im trying to transfer to Northeastern University in Boston for the Fall. I have good grades and recs just kind of doubtful because i dont have all the extra cirrcular activies as some of the other applicants.

Sorry for the late response, rossboss. I have a daughter at an Ivy and she knows quite a few vets both in the undergrad program, and grad schools. They add so much wisdom and real life knowledge to the class and social environments.

Don’t worry about ECs! You have an array of amazing experiences which will demonstrate leadership, maturity, and commitment–as well as the ultimate public service.

Boston is a great town for college–good luck!

I’m curious if anyone has any ideas on this. I’ve heard a lot of good news for veterans, like vets with poor high school grades getting into good schools such as Northeastern, but what about transfers? See, I had decent grades in high school, 3.34 with honors and ap courses, tons of EC in high school, but my first semester of college was poor. I had a 2.12 in Fall 07, I bumped it up to a 3.25 for the spring semester, and I took a summer semester while in the military in the summer of 09 and had a 3.7. My total GPA is 2.94.

Does anyone know how much that first college semester four years ago will affect me? As a vet, will a 2.94 overall college GPA suffice for Northeastern?

Troianii- Since your 2.12 GPA semester was way back in 2007, I would guess admissions would not put too much weight on that grade. It is over four years later, you have matured a lot while serving, and developed all sorts of new life skills. Don’t worry about the overall GPA, just concentrate on expressing your new leadership skills, and the breadth of your other military experiences in the personal essays. Good luck.
