Does Being Homeschooled Hurt my chances of admission?
I am in the 9th going to 10th an I am homeschooled. It was kind of the only option, We tried public school, however they were dangerous and perceived as “not good” schools. I am technically homeschooled although, I take classes at a church school, that is set up as a regular school, but still technically homeschooled, even though they can suspend someone. I had one other option, and the majority of the kid there went to community college, and they had 3 AP’s based on the amount of people that signed up. The charter school were full. Leaving me to, be homeschooled.
Post in the homeschool forum and take a look at what colleges say about h/s kids applying, the expectations and any addl forms or info required…
Lots of homeschooled kids get into every level of college- but you & your parents have more work to do. As @lookingforward, the homeschooling forum is a great resource, so get to know those folks. And, get ready to do a lot of paperwork!
I’ll also suggest working on grammar, usage, and mechanics.
Being homeschooled doesn’t hurt a student’s chances of admission. Homeschooled students who are self-directed generally hit the ground running and adcoms like that. However, their records have to be competitive. Classes have to be rigorous, grades and test scores have to fall within a college’s stated guidelines, and students need to present a cohesive application.
You need to work on your writing. It doesn’t matter where your classes come from – you could take courses at a cc, find free or low cost courses online, buy texts and self study, etc. – but you have to do well in them. Make sure you know what courses you’re required to take in your state to complete high school and what courses colleges require for admission. Sometimes, minimum homeschool requirements don’t meet minimum admission requirements. You may want to ask your parents to pick up a grammar/usage workbook (Amazon carries them for ~$10) and spend the summer brushing up.
Good luck.
My homeschooled student (since 3rd grade) got into 9/10 universities.
It doesn’t have to stop you whatsoever.
Definitely work on writing. Do you have someone to guide you through your homeschooling? Parent, guardian, teacher-mentor? Who is maintaining your transcript? That is something that should be updated every semester, if not every year.
What state are you in? Be aware of your state’s laws. What colleges are you considering? You might want to start browsing their admission pages to see if there are any special requirements or “hoops” that homeschoolers have to jump through.
Wishing you luck - homeschooling is a wonderful option if it’s done correctly.
