As a homeschooler, will bad ap exam scores hurt my chance?

Hi Guys!
I am currently a homeschooled junior and I am wondering if my ap scores affect my admission to top university. Currently I am aiming for top 20 schools in US but I am sure I will not do well on 2017 exams. I felt that ap is the only way for college to evaluate my academic ability since I am homeschooled. I am so worried. Other than my ap scores, my stats are great:( Perfect GPA Perfect ACT! I just did not study hard for this ap tests. And starting this summer, I will start taking college credit courses!

My middle son took two AP exams without studying (they “sort of” corresponded with some college classes he took) and didn’t do well at all, so he had the scores removed and didn’t report them. He took 39.5 units of community college classes, though, and was accepted to some excellent schools including UPenn, UCSD, Northeastern and U Rochester. You need three SAT II scores and some strong grades in those college classes.

Thank you so much for your comment:) I have an additional question. Do you think that homeschool negatively affect your child’s admission to those school? Both my parents and I are really worried about this as some people say that it does hurt my chance.
I am using online programs for homeschool and as I mentioned I have perfect gpa perfect act. I also took several sat subjects and all scored 750+. My clep testing results are also good. Extracurricular…i did lots of stuff and one of the counselor I’ve known told me that my extracurriculars are very impressive. Do you think I will have chance to get into those universities? Especiallay HYPS.

Plenty of homeschoolers have been admitted to elite schools. No one can predict your success at competitive admissions.

For this yr’s admissions, I have read about homeschoolers being accepted to Stanford, Yale, Duke, ND, Berkeley, Harvard, Davidson, UNC-CH, UVA, etc. A couple were named Cornelius Scholars at Vanderbilt. A frequent poster on CC’s Dd is currently at a Princeton (and was awarded Stamps at GT last yr.) Homeschoolers are at MIT, etc. (I have been homeschooling for well over 20 yrs and homeschoolers have been successfully admitted to top schools for as long as I can remember.)

“Perfect ACT!”
“I also took several sat subjects and all scored 750+.”

All of this will help, and is actually quite impressive. I think that homeschooling makes it harder for universities to compare your GPA with other students, but the ACT and SAT Subject tests of course do give a direct comparison with others.

“My middle son took two AP exams without studying”

My younger daughter did sort of the opposite: She took an AP test without taking the class, but with a LOT of studying on her own. She did very well (a 5). To me this suggests that OP should do some sort of AP preparation before taking the test.

Also, of course as is always recommended on CC: Apply to a range of universities, and include some that are both safe (you will get in and are willing to go there) and economically safe (you can afford to go there).

First of all, thank you so much!! Do you have any tips to get into top elite school in US as a homeschooler? I feel much relieved after reading your post as my mom keep wanted me to go back to high school(which I did not want to). What should I add more to become a better applicant compared to regular high school applicants?

Thank you very much. And your point about gpa…Exactly! I am really worried about that. The admissions will not be sure about my homeschooled gpa since they can’t assume anything. But anyway thank you again very much for your reply:)

No, I don’t think homeschooling had a negative effect on either of my son’s college admissions. In fact, my middle son, mentioned above, did far better in admissions than I ever thought possible. He had lots of weaknesses and red flags. Homeschooling allowed us to explain a lot about his weaknesses and highlight his strengths far better than any school could have done.

My oldest son was homeschooled all the way through and got into all the colleges to which he applied including MIT, Princeton, Penn and Caltech (he wasn’t interested in HYS or any other Ivy). He was a top achiever-national level achievements in three disciplines (math, physics, chess), top scores, grades, letters of recommendation, etc. Agree that homeschoolers get into top colleges, but homeschoolers, like everyone else, get rejected by top colleges, too. Don’t put all your eggs in one basket; don’t have “dream” schools, and do have match and safety schools that you can afford and that you like. Yes, you’ve got some great stats already, but manage your expectations nonetheless.

My rule is this: if you get into one highly selective school, that’s a golden ticket. Here’s an article that might be helpful:

Are you a US citizen? Admission for international students is very competitive.

No I am not. I am international student, I applied for permanent resident though

Thank you again so much!!!
