My dad went to Northwestern and I was wondering if that would help my chances. My grades aren't stellar by Northwestern standards but I have a 3.4 weighted GPA, 8 AP classes by the time I graduate, I'm in the top 25% of my class, and many ECs (Pres of International thespian society, sec of unity club and spanish club, volunteer teaching begining guitar, and more). I know this school is a reach (probably a way reach) but will my dad's havng gone to school there help me?
Thanks

I know that they for sure like siblings, but I’m guessing legacy helps somewhat. My grandpa went to NU long ago…

what’s your unweighted? your gpa is a bit low, but if your test scores are good your dad’s connection will help. and probably more so if he’s still in the alumni org.

Are you applying to School of Comm for Theater? That would change things. If you’re applying to Weinberg, I give you a .1% chance of admission.

(I’m assuming you’re a middle class white female)

it doesnt really help unless they still donate significantly to the school or work there. maybe in a dead tie the win goes to the legacy but otherwise dont count on it compensating for low grades

3.4 UNweighted would be low; so weighted could be your undoing.
Even if you’ve got strong board score, i would consider NU a substantial reach (and that’s counting you as a legacy)

It’s good to know siblings count as D1 will begin Medill this year. D2 is undecided but will definitely apply to NU. She has a 3.9 and a 2350 but who knows with such an unpredictable admissions process. Family originally from Chicago area so that, along with sisterly affection, may be the magnet that draws her to Evanston.

Agree with previous posters, your legacy status will NOT help you since your weighted GPA is too low for NU. If your UN-Weighted GPA was, say, around 3.6 then your legacy status WOULD help you.

yeah, it really depends which school, comm and theater or music would probably not be too bad if you are looking into those and are skilled… but the gpa is a bit too low.

I don’t know why everyone thinks getting into the SoC school is so much easier than anywhere else, especially as a theater major. It’s one of the smallest programs with one of the higher application rates.

its not easier to get into as much as gpa doesn’t matter if you have the skills and experience. someone got in from one of the schools around here with a low gpa (around a 3.4UW), but she was like the best actress in the state or something like that.
