Does Berkeley discriminate if you take easier classes?

Hey people who got into UCLA or UCberkeley, what did your first (semester/quarter) at community college look like? I am trying to sign up for classes and I can't decide if I should push myself and take harder classes or play it safe and take classes I can Ace? I really want to get into Berkeley so any input would be much appreciated. Thanks in Advance.

P.S I am currently undecided on my major so I am going to try to complete IGETC first and then worry about any remaining prerequisites.

Hmm, what do you mean 'easier' versus 'harder' classes? Be more specific, its all relative after all. Oh yeah, clear your PM box if you want a response :)

if you even deserve to be at berkeley, then you should be challenging yourself....why would you want to sign up for easy classes, when you'll get your A S S kicked once you reach berkeley?

good luck and dont limit yourself for an A, when you can be learning and pushing yourself for an A.

You should also find a major, this way you can satisfy your prereqs under IGETC. It saves time!

This is a simple question. Take easy classes! Berkeley doesn't give a hoot whatever class you take to complete your IGETC. Take whatever sounds interesting to you. Some of the classes I took to complete my IGETC are Music Appreciation, Theatre Arts, and Geography. Hey, if it gets the job done...

Ooooh, and one helpful tip. If you don't already know about it, use ratemyprofessors.com. There are reviews of nearly all your schools teachers on there written by students. Let's you know if the teacher is good or not. Very helpful!

got into UCLA, didn't apply to Cal.

First semester schedule

General Chemistry 1
Politcal Philosophy
English 2
Music Appreciation

Socalgal is right, take the easiest classes especially if u're not set on a major.

It's hard to transfer in 2 years as a science major if u don't start on it right away.

This is exactly what I want to know. WHether I should be taking harder classes to impress the adcoms.

My major is business

how about you figure out a major and then go about deciding what college would best fit you..

i dont see why your goal is berkeley. does berkeley have any majors that interest you? thats the real question.

it's perfectly normal to not know ur major right away. Like 30%+ of fresh apply as undecided.

ilovecalifornia: people often go to colleges like berkeley, just because of its prestige.

no i know, its just not smart in my opinion. i mean, great go to berkeley, but have a better reason than 'its prestigious'

theres no point in attending a school that doesn't have your major, just for the sake of attending that school lol. he should figure out what he wants to do asap thats all

i don't think these kinds of decisions should be rushed. if it takes a year to figure it out thats fine.

it's pretty rare that a big school doesn't have ur major.

Cal is great for any major really. Anywhere from biomedical engineering to english.

im a spring admit who's going to do a semester at a community college
i was just wondering about the American Cultures requirement...it says on assist.org that the courses there (amer culture req) may satisfy other berkeley breadth requirements or a department's major requirements. im looking at the "women in the economy" course (econ 25) which also falls under the Social and Behavioral Sciences breadth for the college of L&S...does that mean i can satisfy both AmerCul req and that particular breadth by taking econ 25?

ilovecalifornia: Ya, I'd rather go to a school that has my major over some other more prestigious school that doesnt haf any major that relates to what i wanna do. Honestly, Im stil confused what I want to major, but my choices are already narrowed down.

But for jess, he still has time to figure out what he wanna major in

Good Luck

If I followed that mentality, I would be at UCR right now as it has my true major (Creative Writing). I don't know about you guys but I'd rather change my major or minor to something similar at something at a better university (English at UCB or UCLA) than be forced to study at UCR. In any case, though UCB doesn't have this major it still offers a wealth of opportunities to study in it (there is a creative writing minor, writing groups, fantastic english profs etc.)

While it's not written anywhere, there are certain things that people can't help but be impressed by. If it came down to you and someone else with the same stats but easier classes, you'd probably get in.

Yes, I'd rather go to ucla majoring bizecon/ mathecon with accounting minor than going to Cal State northridge majoring accounting.

However, I wouldnt go to harvard just because its prestige. I would take berkeley over harvard, because berkeley has my business major.

hmm, I'd say the prestige difference between Harvard and Haas is negligible. The difference between UCLA and CSUN is much more pronounced. Just my evidenceless two cents :)
