Does Bowdoin and Pomona colleges good for Computer Science?

Can’t understand what reputation this two colleges have for Computer Science study. In some ratings their positions enough high, in some ratings they absolutely absent.

I don’t know about Bowdoin, but when I toured Pomona with DD who was interested in computer science. Pomona emphasized their ability to get kids into grad school, which didn’t appeal, so DD didn’t apply.

Harvey Mudd is the Claremont college that is excellent for computer science. Students at other Claremont colleges can take classes at Harvey Mudd.

I’m not from USA so many things are absolutely new for me. But I afraid it’s impossible to be admitted in Pomona and after that get education in Harvey Mudd  . Some classes are some classes.
Claremont colleges is something that I can’t understand what it is. From forums I see that they highly valued in USA. But why they absent in main “Best World U” ratings, QS for example? Can someone explain to me?

They’re not universities and have no PhD programs. They’re liberal arts colleges that offer only BA and BS programs.

Bowdoin and Pomona aren’t in most computer science rankings because rankings are usually for graduate programs.

This CC forum resource could help with respect to preliminary research: http://talk.qa.collegeconfidential.com/math-computer-science-majors/1814245-computer-science-at-some-smaller-schools-including-liberal-arts-colleges-p2.html. Note that you may need to cross-reference with current course catalogs for fully up-to-date information.

. The Claremont Colleges are all connected: students can take classes at any of the colleges at the same time, for the same tuition.

@collegemom3717 But just today I read at forum that Harvey Mudd stop acceptance of students from another Claremont Colleges to his computer classes. Does it true?

Afaik, they can. There is one course that you can only take if you are either a HM student or majoring in CS at Pitzer, Scripps or CMC (b/c they don’t have a CS major, and you do it at HM). BUT: from your other posts, I don’t know if these are affordable choices for you.

@collegemom3717 My son for certain want to study CS. Problem that in Harvey Mudd for international student almost zero chances to get any aid and sticker price absolutely out of my budget. Pomona is generous to international students but not so good for CS. So now I trying to understand will he have ability after acceptance to Pomona at list some time study in HM or not.

@collegemom3717 your statement in post #5 is overly broad. While it is generally true that cross registration is easy, students are still subject to some restrictions. For example, Pomona does not permit off campus majors. If you are a Pomona CS student you have to major at Pomona and take the introductory CS sequence at Pomona. https://www.cs.hmc.edu/off-campus-students. Also more broadly, Pomona students have to follow the rules set by the department they are majoring in. For example, the Economics Department at Pomona requires that Pomona econ majors take the core six classes for the major at Pomona. For example you can’t swap out CMC’s intro macro class for the Pomona intro macro class.

True & thanks for the extra info, @Corinthian.

Very interesting how it’s work. For example Scripps acceptance rate is 28%, Harvey Mudd acceptance rate is 13%. What sense in that case strive for place in HM, if you can just go to Scripps for CS, and after that HM must give you place because Scripps is sister school without CS major. Do I missing something?

Information for majoring in CS at Mudd for students at the other Claremont colleges:

However, of the non-Mudd Claremont colleges, Pomona has CS natively.

@Alezzz Just be sure to be aware that Scripps College is a women’s college. All your other Claremont choices are co ed. Scripps and Pitzer College are much easier than Pomona College for US citizens. I don’t know the % international students each of the Claremont schools accept, but it may be available on line to check. For financial aid for international that is very limiting. Wellesley College, if you are a girl is another that offers a lot of financial aid
and offers generous cross registration with MIT, also with some rules.
