Does Caltech have a speech and debate team?

I checked out the list of clubs, and didn't see debate on there. However, that seems sort of weird, don't most colleges have speech and debate?
Can any of you Techers/future Techers help me out here? :)

Haha, Caltech is not most colleges. As far as I know we do not have a speech and debate team, although if you wanted to start one I’m sure it would be funded…

Well, it might be a little difficult for a new club to get funding for stuff like going to national competitions. You’ll probably have to have it running well for a while before you’ll get funding for something like that.

My club got a grand total of 12 dollars worth of funding, even though we placed 6th in a national tournament of over 20 schools.

Down with the elitist facade known as ASCIT. The revolution is here!

That’s interesting.

I know many school advertise how easy it is to get funding for clubs but does Caltech not hand out money that easily?

ASCIT is the student organization here, and they hand out the club money. The school funds money for some things, but most normal club money goes through ASCIT. My threats to toilet paper their house if they didn’t give me more money didn’t get me far, probably because I share a hovse with some of them.

As anywhere, people are going to have problems with the way things are run. Mostly we just feel we don’t get enough donuts for our membership dues.

However, there are many new clubs that get funding for things, usually because the school wants to promote something or other.

So in short, sometimes it’s ridiculously easy to get money for things, somethings it seems unnecessarily difficult.

I found it super easy to get funding for clubs while I was at Caltech. Maybe things have changed.

Oh, thanks for the info! Yeah, I figured Caltech might not have one… I guess debate is just an abnormally active club at my school? We’ve got a LOT of people who are both science-obsessed and on debate, I figured other places might be the same.
What was your club, Kamikaze?

Canary I’m not sure how popular speech and debate are on the west coast. My high school in NJ didn’t have a team till after I graduated, and in my experience (competing at PA college, assistant coaching PA high school), the largest pockets of speech/debate are the midwest (HUGE), Florida, and Texas. There were a handful of science-minded kids on the team I worked for. One kid I know went to GT, but I don’t think he planned on continuing with the activity.
