Does anyone know if Caltech recuits for athletics? or do they put less emphasis on it than other schools? Can being pretty good in a sport help you get in if you've had contact with the coach?

HA!

That's a no.

Hmmm, they def. do it at MIT

I'm not sure if it will get you in, but they definately make an effort to find talented athletes.

(My friend (female) has played V. Soccer and V. Basketball for 4 years in high school, and the coaches and people kept sending her things and telling her she could play for their team. She refuses to consider it because of the mascot. Just kidding, mostly, but I was angry at her because she had never heard of Caltech before).

Coaches are interested in getting good athletes to apply, and coaches will write students a letter of support for students whom they particularly want. These letters sometimes make some difference in very borderline cases, but the emphasis on athletics is much, much smaller at Caltech than at our peer schools.

it would seem so. the mit track coach called me and told me to apply, so i did.

So the difference would be more of a high end-waitlist to accepted difference than a rejected to accepted difference.

They do recruit. I’m being recruited for basketball even though their team sucks; but I’m smart too.

Recruit typically implies that the coach can affect admissions making it easier for an athlete to gain acceptance. This is not true at Caltech. The coaches have no affect on admissions.

Yes they do recruit. I was recruited and accepted and anyone who wants further info about the process and the minimal impact is has on admissions can PM me.

Well things have changed then, I guess. Sadness.

dLo- Reread ^^^ post…minimal impact on admissions.

if the coaches are “recruiting” you it means that they think you have the academic background to succeed here and the athletic talent to make their respective teams better.

Has anyone seen that “Numb3rs” episode about the Cal Sci (a fictional technical university based on Caltech) basketball team?

They used the caltech basketball team as the Calsci bball team in it. The funny part was they tried to make the caltech coach look young and have him play an undergrad. It was hilarious.
