I'm a recent graduate who majored in History. I was among the fortunate few among my class to have had a job upon graduation. My job actually has nothing to do with my major and I'm actually doing stuff that involves things like contracts, collections, billing, operations, etc.

When I applied for my job, it actually listed something along the lines of: Requirement - BA/BS in Finance, Business Administration, Mathematics, or similar field required. I obviously wasn't any of those majors, but I somehow was able to get the job regardless.

So anyways, in the future, should I decide to apply for similar jobs/positions, do you think employers will care about my major, or will they primarily focus on my work experience?

I have also wanted to apply to several jobs but I have been apprehensive about it because most jobs state that they want a BA/BS in Business administration or something similiar. Should I still apply anyway? History isn’t really similiar to what they are asking.

I applied for a job that was looking for BS degrees, and I applied with my BA in political science. I’ve been working here for nearly a year and a half now.

One of the biggest things I’ve learned about applying for jobs is that selecting yourself out is a terrible idea. If you apply for a job whose requirements you don’t think you meet, the worst that will happen is that you won’t get the job.

And yeah, like soccerguy said, after you have work experience, your degree loses most of its meaning. All that matters is whether you can make your company money!

Sounds good. I was looking toward the future should I ever apply to management level positions, and that’s why I was concerned about my major, but glad to know that work experience trumps all.
