Comments such as, “There is a PR movement on the left that throws out crazy data” or that refer to “clearly ideological driven” are undeniably showing their own bias.
The problem exists. Rampant? Consider Paul’s advice to be wary.
These threads about campus assault (many offenses fall under this umbrella, including rape,) tend to go on for dozens of pages.
@roethlisburger Considering the amount of rapes/sexual assaults that go unreported or are handled improperly by schools, police, etc, I’m sure the number is still at least as large as in the “ideologically driven” scenarios you are describing. Out of my two friends that were raped, one did not report it because she was best friends with the guy before and kept telling herself it was partially her fault. The other was victim-blamed by the administration and nothing happened. These may be personal anecdotes, but they are extremely common.
@philbegas
The CDC studies, which I don’t like, and NCVS, which I think has more reasonable estimates, are both based on surveys. Those estimates already include rapes never reported to the police or school officials.
Maybe one thing we can all agree on is the need for college students to moderate their drinking. Drinking to the point you pass out unconscious or blackout would result in negative health consequences, DUIs, and stupid accidents even in a world where sexual assault didn’t exist.
I do wish these surveys and polls would be more specific. There is a huge difference between getting groped and getting raped. There is also a huge difference between having sex when you are both drunk, and actual rape.
Huge difference? Really? You’d laugh it off if someone stuck their hands up your skirt? And if a woman drank and passed out with a guy you’d be fine with him having sex with her because they were both drinking? Please tell me I’m misunderstanding your post.
Always a difficult subject because the target is always moving. Many posts talk about the old fashioned attack – some guy lurking around the corner for the unsuspecting victim. I would say on gut feel that is the rarest of them all. With lighting, phones, security, rides and such there is no reason for it to happen in any significant amount.
The bigger issue is the attack during what old timers called “courtship.” Those are much more common and harder to figure out. So now the statistics start to blur. What is an “attack” or “assault?” When does consent end? What role do substances play? It’s not just in the Greek system either. Read any college newspaper on Monday – it’s equal opportunity. Guys need to be just as careful as girls.
Drunk is not the same as being passed out. If someone is frequently drinking to the point of being passed out(unconscious and can’t be woken up), they need treatment for alcohol addiction.
Drunk is not the same as passed out, but drinking often leads to what can euphemistically be called heavy sleeping. And it doesn’t matter if someone drinks frequently or not. If they’re sleeping, they can’t consent either, whether or not they’ve been drinking is irrelevant.
I had a case of stalking with a guy which was reported its just my college refused to do anything about it. It lasted for 4 years and he even ended up in 8 of my classes. Not the same major also. I had witnesses to his weird and concerning behavior. My college (deans and counselors) told me basically it was my fault this happened and told me to deal with it till he graduated in order to protect him. Im getting over the situation but it still happened and is there.
At my school a lot of the cases go unresolved. If they are reported then they turn a blind eye. In two cases i know the guy was allowed back to school once the trial was over. One guy which was accused had to take a year and half off. The other his fraternity was on suspension both graduated already.
I just guess my school doesnt have a really good title 4 department because in my case all they had to do was pull our transcipts to see the commonality. He was psch and CIS major. I was history with a CIS minor. We had 3 history classes together plus physics, calc, freshman comp, and 2 CIS classes. Along with all the other evidence with his behavior.
MODERATOR’S NOTE:
I’m closing this as not passing the sniff test; if it smells like it lives under a bridge… The OP has long left the discussion. On the infinitesimal chance that the post is real, solid answers have already been provided.
