Does coming from an under served area help my chances?

I'm from an area that among the poorest in the country. I was wondering if this would be considered in med school admissions. Regardless of speciality, would this be an advantage?

It might help if you’re committed to returning to that area to practice medicine after graduation or if you’ve overcome significant obstacles on your road to med school application.

Simply coming from a poor area by itself doesn’t convey any special advantage, nor will it make up for a weak application. But either or both of the above will be pluses when the committee reads your application.
