I’m just asking because I feel like my community service is the only thing that’s special for my extracurriculars. I did qualify for track nationals in China but I broke my foot before I could compete. That probably won’t count right?
I just realized there’s a typo. I meant to write application where it says extracurriculars
Despite the 15,000 page thread elsewhere on this site where clueless HS students play the game of rank the ECs, with the exception of a recruited athlete, there really is no statistical difference between one EC and another.
If you were a member of a track team, then you were a member of a track team, regardless of injury.
@skieurope Ok, got it. Thanks!
Also if you personally qualified for nationals that is great. Have you been in contact with track coaches?
For smaller schools, I think ECs that you are likely to pursue at school count more than those you can’t. So being stellar at ice hockey and crew might actually hurt a kid’s chances at a school with neither.
Community service and track/cross country are available at nearly every school, so you should mention your interest and experience in both.
@dogsmama1997 I have not… And it’s too late now to do so.
@CaliMex I am talking about my experiences with both in my essays.
It’s important to talk about what makes you you. If your community service is what excites you, write about it. A person with enthusiasm for service will have a place in a BS community. If it is just something you did, it’s no different than any other activity.
@gardenstategal Ok, thanks!
I now have a canned answer for all of these questions. There is a school for you. Go out and find it. Look for the one that values your strengths. Look for schools that require community service of their students. Schools spend resources on the things they think are important.
You’re comparing apples and oranges. Remember, admissions committees are building communities. They need the athletes, the artists, the musicians, the community service people, etc. If a particular school has plenty of great artist applicants, but fewer community service oriented people, then community service may “count” more. It a different school has plenty of community service oriented applicants, but fewer artistic applicants, then community service may “count” less. Larger schools can look for more specialized individuals, while smaller schools likely prefer multi-specialty individuals.
This is why M9/10 is so unpredictable. You just have to see where the chips fall.
