Okay, so I realize that you should be doing extracurricular activities, but I am confused... Is there simply a category for all hours in extracurricular activities including sports, volunteer hours, community service, etc. Or does an application ask more specifically how many hours you spend on sports how many you spend on community service. If it is simply a single section asking your combined hours of out of school activity, then wouldn't pretty much everyone who did a sport during high school be maxed out on their hours? Please help clarify and summarize this confusion. Also, do internships count as community service hours or what do they go toward?

Thanks in advance!

There is one section where you can list all ECs–work experience, volunteering, sports, etc. You list them separately and indicate your time commitment and length of involvement in each.

No, internships don’t count as CS. They are just that: internships.

I’m confused what you mean by asking “what do they go toward?” There’s no set number of hours you need to volunteer or otherwise be involved outside of school for admission to college.

Thanks for the response.

So again, wouldn’t pretty much everyone who did a sport during high school not need to do community service hours if it is all in the same category?

It was never said that one EC would grant you better admission chances over another. Sports and volunteering are kinds of ECs, just like blogging, debating and music, too, are.

My point is: you don’t have to, specifically, pick between sports and volunteering. You can actually choose to have anything you like to do outside classroom as an EC; here you could even pick both athletic and volunteer work.
