Does Dartmouth live up to its hype in the college books?

Mensa160,

Has anybody carded you?
Imagine instead of being born with a supposedly large IQ you had a large member extending from your body--an arm or something--
would you then call yourself 12InchArm? or what ever other body part it was.

You kill me dude! lol mensa160--it kills me every time I read it!

Speaking of dorms, what are they like? I know they aren't guaranteed and that there's a bit of a housing crunch, but I mean rooms. Are the big, are they well-equipped, are the dorms in good shape, etc.?

The housing crunch came with the 05's when more students enrolled than the school anticipated. At the time the school gave a year's free housing to those who would defer a year. They are graduating this year which is going to free up some housing. In addition, I beleive that 2 new dorms are being built. with the amount of off campus housing, I don't think anyone went homeless. Housing is guaranteed for freshmen so that will not be a problem

If you go to the bathroom thread, there is talk about the dorms.

Do you call yourself "Three Inch Nails"?

No genuis,

why do you ask?

(by the way, I'm not picking on a middle-school kid am I? If so let me know and I'll apoligize, I was just having fun with your inappropriately obnoxious screen name.......and the prestige-whoring and, well, leave it there)

no problem, kalidescope.

HAHAHA. Kalidescope! That was so funny. Oh boy. Wiping tears of laughter from my eyes now lol.

My ID is about one of my characteristics though - few people realize, but bluirinka translates to "blue...eye...rinka." my eyes are blue lol. and my nickname in Russian is Rinka (my parents are both from Moscow, and even though I was born in NJ i speak Russian fluently...I don't just randomly make screen names out of what my name would be in other languages lol)

Perhaps the IQ is the only thing Mensa is able to flaunt. I mean I bet a lot of people on this board have an even higher IQ - I'm at 170. But I actually have other characteristics...you know, things that I wasn't born with, traits I achieved through hard work, that I would rather be associated with. It's why I wrote an essay for Lit Mag about how ridiculous it is to worship supermodels and the like for being beautiful - they didn't DO anything to warrant this beauty, they just had favorable genes.

But what the hell does Three Inch Nails have to do with Kalidescope?

Anyway, back to Dartmouth. When the likely letters came in, I was asking some of the more...qualified, shall we say?...kids in my class whether or not they had applied, and if so, whether they'd received a likely letter. Many of them said they hadn't applied, so I asked out of curiosity why not. One said it's in the middle of nowhere, another that it's full of preppy white rich kids.

The middle of nowhere thing corresponds to earlier posts I read - I believe that if you're an environment with new, fascinating, passionate people, it shouldn't matter that there aren't any skyscrapers or homeless people urinating on them. (lol...which is my memory of NYU. and don't start yelling at me that NYU is beautiful! I know it has its high points lol)

And with the "preppy rich white kids"...you'll find people like that anywhere. Except maybe Morehouse haha. They had the means of getting a good education early on, their parents could afford all the SAT tutors and bassoon lessons and whatnot. But just because they're there...you don't necessarily have to become like them. There will be people like you there too, people you will be friends with for the rest of your life. It seems stupid, to me, to rule out a college because of the presence of so-called "preppy rich white kids". And besides that, I know a lot of preppy rich white kids - it's not their FAULT their parents have a lot of money, and you know what? Lots of them are great people and totally worth talking to. I couldn't believe this person was so closeminded.

As I hear, everyone looks the same in winter, that is heavy clothing and covered with snow........I guess that would make everyone look white and well clothed.:)

Most people, when thinking of a place to holiday, think of getting away. Dartmouth is certainly a get away--and a unique get-away at that. Although, I'm sure there are those who dream of vacations in the suburbs and inner-city.

That's your PSAT.

Another wicked slam by the mensa!
and at dinner-time too!

LOL it's only 3:14 where I live. West coast dominates the East coast! Bwahahahaha. :D

lol...i WISH that was my PSAT mensa! thanks SO MUCH for making me feel like crap because i can't even get a 170.

actually i got a much higher score. but i'm not going to post it and brag about it. because...i have manners? maybe?

I hope this is the kind of entertaining back and forth I can expect from 4-years at D-Mouth

nah you won't. i'm not going to get in :-D lol

basically, the system works. immature people like me won't get in - social darwinism triumphs haha

social darwinism went out with national socialism:mad:

Never forget: the system is always broke.

destiny not darwinism!

People who go to Dartmouth love it. But it is really isolated.

[/quote]

As a Cornell guy I heard the same thing about Ithaca ... I always thought of it as being in a small college town where the focus of the social life was on the activities of the school ... which I viewed as a very big positive!

I got a letter in the mail about 3 weeks ago, inviting me to the Dartmouth Club of Kentucky's annual post-holiday party. I talked to the few other kids I know from this area who have been accepted, and they all had the letter too, so we decided to go. . .

It was incredible. There weren't more than 20 people there, but all of them were either alums, or married to alums. And EVERY SINGLE PERSON was nothing but 100% positive about Dartmouth. The comments were all glowing; the atmosphere, the profs, the students, the activities, the snow, everything had added up in these peoples' minds to four terrific years.

It's this continuous, positive reinforcement that you always see from Dartmouth alums that speaks to this school more than anything else. College books can make anywhere look good - but when the people who actually attended love it this much, you know the talk is more than just hype. That community should really be proud of the loyalty that the school manages to foster in seemingly everyone who attends. Truly remarkable.

It really is remarkable I have 5 Dartmouth friends visiting this weekend and we always talk about how great it is. Everyone just loves the place.

lol well if the typical Dart student is so positive...I would DEFINITELY fit in there. One time this friend of mine said that sometimes he couldn't stand hanging out with me because I'm "too perpetually positive" and "constantly cheerful."

He's right, though. my college essay pretty much highlighted what a positive (but NOT naive) person I am. And no, it's not as boring as it sounds. It talks about how my grandfather would annoy me with bizarre career suggestions...and after he suggested that I run for president, my dad told me to read his autobiography. What I found was him chronicling these really harsh events - the holocaust, immigration - but it was never negative. It was always optimistic, full of anecdotes rather than suffering. Which made me realize that we have a lot in common, because it reminded me of my own Livejournal, where I type up all the funny things that happen to me every day...I think I have so many daily readers b/c no one wants to read about other people's angst, they just want to hear the funny stuff. Basically, woohoo for optimists. Maybe I really do belong at Dartmouth. lol

P.S. Do Dartmouth kids get ****ed when people call it "Dart"? I know most Penn kids don't like it when their school is called "UPenn"...
