I know it's kind of silly but I'm a junior in high school and I've always wanted to dye my hair and haven't because of my parents. They are not necessarily the strictest parents ever but they have a very conservative viewpoint when it comes to hair, clothing makeup etc. They are Asian and have the conservatism of traditional Chinese people :P

My mom is a firm believer that I shouldn't dye my hair because it gives off the impression that I want to be bad or rebellious and that college admissions people wouldn't like me. Granted, the colors I want to dye my hair would be obviously unnatural i.e red or pale blonde but it's not anything like pink or blue. I haven't read much into it but how much would college admission people know about my appearance? From what I've gathered interviews don't count for much and it's unlikely they have the time to peek at my Facebook photos.

Thoughts?

As long as you are not dying your hair blue or purple, I’m sure its fine. Colleges want you to be yourself, not an image of what you think they want you to be. As long as you act professionally I’m sure it will not really be a big deal. I’m naturally a blonde and dyed my hair brown. It didn’t look very natural on me but I was still able to get jobs.

Interviews can count if the interviewer likes you and puts in a good word about your passion for the school. I doubt your hair being blonde, red or black will have much of a bearing on whether or not you are accepted.

Maybe start out with some highlights and if you like it then go from there?

I don’t think the hair (in and of itself) would keep you out of a school. Actually, I think it might be an interesting talking point during an interview. You might be able to share with the interviewer that this is a new look for you, something it took courage to do since your mom thought it might send a wrong message. Would get a chuckle out of the interviewer for sure. (if mentioned at the right time of course.)

College, I don’t think so. I see kids of all hair colors getting into top colleges. For jobs, that could be an issue for those jobs where there is a written or unwritten dress code.

my S’s hair is dyed with purple/blue streaks going down to mid-scapula or so. he hasn’t had any problems with his interviews. if you’re confident in yourself, it doesn’t matter if you have purple hair or no hair at all.

College? LOL NO.
Interviews? Depends on where you want to work. I know for sure that Abercrombie and Hollister do not allow you have dyed hair that’s like green, blue, pink, that like. But Hot Topic? Go for it. It just really depends on the work place and such.

I think you should look at work place’s dress code and see how people dress but I wouldn’t dress like that at an interview, maybe after you get the job and have worked there for a while.

I know that certain companies allow tattoos while others just tell you to cover it up.

Good luck!

Individuality is a good quality. Don’t completely tailor yourself for the sake of pleasing colleges. You still want to “be yourself”.
