...if you're going to take Calc BC exam next year and take the respective exam? Does it seem redundant to take two AP exams that basically have the same curriculum, or can a 5 on the Calc BC test cancel out a 2 or 3 on the AB exam?

A 5 on one test doesn’t “cancel out” a 2 or 3 on another test. The scores obviously stand alone but that’s beside the point. It doesn’t matter if you fail the Calc AB AP because you don’t have to send that score to colleges. You can choose which AP scores you send. And if you get a 4 or 5 on the BC AP, you will obviously get calc college credit (depending on the college, though).

The AB-subscore they give you for the BC-exam may be able to “over-ride” your AB score, too, incase your school only gives credit for Calc I.
