Hey Guys, I received a 3 on ,y Calc AB test (as a sophomore). As a Junior, I will be taking BC, so I was wondering if my BC Score could boost my AB score (assuming that I do substantially better on the BC test)?
I’m a Junior that took Calc AB. I got a 5 (Which wasn’t at all surprising considering on the practice tests we took in class I was averaging raw scores in the high 90’s and you only need like a 68 to get a 5.) I’ll be taking BC next year and I hope to get a 5.
If you get a 5 on BC, nobody will care what your AB score was.
@chyaboi123, @skieurope is correct…
However, to directly answer your question, the BC test results in a BC score as well as an AB sub score…
Say, for example, you scored a 4 on BC next year. You got most of the AB content correct but did decent on the BC content.
In this situation, you may end up with an AB sub score of a 5, which would replace your 3!
This is all just information that I have OBSERVED, so I may not be 100% correct, but I’m pretty sure that this it is.
Good luck next year!
@PilotKhyle so lets say I got a 5 on the subscore, my 3 would completely be gone and it would just appear as a 5?
Anyone?
@chyaboi123 Not necessarily… The 5 would just count as an AB score…
So if the college that you want only accepted AP CALCULUS AB/BC scores of 5s to exempt out of CalcI/CalcII, respectively, then you would exempt out of Calc I because your AB sub score was a 5…
Make sense? If you’re worried about the 3 being on your record, I don’t think that any college would care. In fact, it may look better to them to see that you improved! BUT, if later on you decide that you don’t want them to even SEE your current 3, you can request a score cancellation from AP…
I have a quick question. Is getting a 5 on calc bc and the ab subscore a pretty good achievement? Do most high school students who are looking to attend top colleges get this? And is it weighted the same, for example, as a score of 5 on ap psych? Do colleges know the rigor of this test?
I’m in the same boat: I got a 3, and am really bummed out about it. I kind of want to drop AP Stat and take Calc BC… would anyone recommend it? I finished with an 89 in Calc AB…
Your 3 doesn’t go away; it will always remain there.
Yes
Of course.
What do you mean, “weighted the same”? For credit purposes, those schools which give credit will generally give 2 semesters credit for BC and 1 semester credit (or none) for psych.
I’m also a sophomore who took AB. I got a 5. Colleges would probably use your BC exam’s results for placement. It is not weighted the same as other ap exams. The “weight” depends on which college you will attend and which major you want to do there. Usually for calculus, most engineers and business people retake calculus at college that is specifically designed with an emphasis on those fields.
@skieurope: Thank you for answering my questions!
By “weighted the same” I meant to say that if they accounted for the difficulty of each separate AP test, since Calculus is known to be one of the tougher AP’s and psychology is deemed an “easy” AP test. So if a 5 in AP Calculus BC demonstrates the same level of achievement as a 5 in AP Psychology. But now I realize that 5’s are all probably seen as great, regardless of the AP…
@JuicyMango I’m just a student, so take my opinion with a grain of salt. However, I believe a 5 in calc would look much stronger than a 5 in psych and demonstrate that the student can handle college-level course rigor. Note: I have no reason to be biased considering all my ap exams are the “easy” ones (Lang, stats, enviro, apush, psych).
@ambitionsquared Yeah, that’s what I thought as well. The ironic part is that I got 3 in ap psych but a 5 in ap calc bc lol. But I’m retaking ap psych because I only studied for a day last time, which is probably the reason I didn’t get a 4 or 5.
@JuicyMango How hard did you find the test? And did you take the class either this year or last? Its impressive that you can pass an ap exam after a day of studying.
