i've heard that senior year grades count first semester, and is averaged into ur gpa. but i also heard that they're only used to see if you've maintained your average.

Your senior grades count! Remember, all the schools that you apply RD to will see those grades and use them as a determinant for your admission. It’s not like Freshman year where many schools can forgive a few mediocre (C or B -) grades. They expect you to take the most rigorous course Senior year and succeed in it.

EA/ED is not a free ride either. Almost all schools will request midterm grades, so you have even less time to correct early mistakes.

^ No. ED/EA decision will come out before mid-year report with first semester grades. None of the schools my D applied/admitted EA request mid-term/mid-year grades. Midterm grades are not on transcript. For those who need to improve their GPA should wait for the first semester grade to apply RD as the mid-year report should be available in Jan/Feb. All schools will require final school report after admission. Poor performance in senior will get you rescinded.

Majority of colleges, including most public universities, do not require mid-year senior grades to determine admission but instead use grades through junior year. A large minority require them, and except for EA or ED, do use them to detemrne admission; some factor it in as any other semester and some use them to confirm what is already there, and reality is both of those are probably the same thing in that senior, first semester grades are important. The exeption is colleges with ED or EA, most of which use only grades through junior year to determine EA or ED admission and do not require any submission of senior grades until after senior year is over. Others require senior first semester grades after admission via ED or EA and some require mid-semester grades in first selmester senior year before making the early decision. Also, all colleges reserve the right to withdraw your admisison if senior year grades submitted after being admitted, including in June, are disappointing.

Not sure what schools you’re talking about, but yes, the EA/ED decision comes out before 1st semester grades are out. BUT, at our HS, virtually every Top 25 National or LAC applied to asked for and got midterm 1st semester senior year grades. The students were not asked for them or even told about it, the request went directly to the school. State flagship and many rolling admission schools, no, they just use what exists at the time of application, but in my experience, highly competitive, elite schools are going to ask for midterms. YMMV.

I can ask my D’s GC about that as plenty of students applied to Ivies and top elite schools there every year. During the previous meetings about college applications with the GC, they never mention about sending mid-term grades. Also, in my D’s school, the transcripts are requested by students at Parchment directly and the GC do not handle that.

again… why is there such ambiguity?? everyone here as a different answer.
or maybe is it that schools have different policies? I’m just concerned if competitive schools, like nyu stern, berkely, upen, cornell, etc AVERAGE in 1st term senior year grades. i know they definitely care about it, but i’m interested in knowing if 1st term senior year grades will impact my gpa determined for admissions.

If you are applying RD, definitely yes, but the UCs might be an exception.

^ I think this part should have no confusion.

This. But generally, the more competitive the school, the better the chance that they will want to see every possible grade up to the point that you submit your application, and they will assess your application with all these grades in mind.

Every school my kid applied to required a fall semester updated transcript, and the school which he enrolled in required the final transcript after graduation. Nowhere to hide . . . .

Older S at UC Davis and did not ask for Mid-Year transcripts but he did update his Mid-Year grades via the admission portal. Only final transcripts were required for him.
Younger S accepted this year to SDSU. Mid-Year transcripts required before May 1 if SIRing and the final transcripts in July.
Yes, each school has their own policy.

Yes, they absolutely do. You need to send mid-year grades for EA/ED as well as RD. And a final transcript will also be required.
