I am a high school senior and recently visited U of C. I loved the campus and am very attracted by its academics. But after the tour they had a student panel that when asked about the social life made it sound nonexistent! They repeatedly told us how proud they were to be "nerds" and one girl said a fun Friday night would be a game of Risk in a friend's dorm room! Did these students accurately portray the majority of U of C students and their social lives? I am a very serious student, but I realize that college (and life) has to be about more than just studying! According to the student panel, U of C students proudly wear t-shirts that read: "The University of Chicago: Where fun comes to die." While funny, that description is definitely NOT appealing. Can someone please tell me if this is true?

No.
Actually yes.

Risk is a fun game.

Fun doesn't just die, it's eviscerated. Terrible, dark creatures from R'lyeh rise from the bowels of Chicago's nether-regions to rend the flesh from any who would dare "have fun."

BE WARNED! FLEE WHILE YOU CAN!

And there you have your answers.

sigh

do u honestly believe that 4,500 18-22 year olds could live in such close proximity to each other and chose to entertain themselves by no other means than playing risk?

yes, there are those who study 24/7 then read plato for fun on friday night.
and yes, there are also those who shock regularly get retarded at jimmy's (the nearest bar on campus) or at the pub...who do lines...who get stoned...and everything else under the sun.

but most people fall between the two extremes.

don't worry, there's a frat party every weekend and ussually several apartment parties.

Honestly, I don't go here, but from what I have gathered, students there really do have a lot of fun. But, if you were to say, switch the student body at Arizona State with that of UChicago, you would probably hear a statement like this being made because UChicago -from what I gather- is extremely rigorous...you can't sleep through class, and animal-house type frat parties are probably pretty rare if not nonexistant. (Again, these are only my conjectures)

Diocletian, does it get tiring to retype the same unfunny joke over and over again? Just curious.

As for the original question, it literally depends on who you choose to hang out with. If you want to party, you'll find parties and if you're even moderately attractive, you already have an edge over everyone else.

Uh...? Wake up on the wrong side of the bed?

Anyways, the answer is no. It's in my paste buffer!

Does it get tiring to persistently act like an ass?

Ahhhhhhhh I love risk! That is my idea of collegiate good times.

Maybe idad could give us a perspective on fun back in the day compared to how it is now. At least then we'd know if there is an upward trend...

I just want all you people to know that it is impossible to get a sensible, coherent answer out of one of you. Everytime I post here you (1) do not read the OP and post whatever crap you happen feel like spewing from your ars at that particular moment, (2) read the question the way YOU want it to read and answer the question accordingly, or (3) engage in some self-satisfying, pompous tirade against the question asked and how incorrect it is to ask such a question.

Yeah, you guys aren't any fun. ;)

I didn't really mean for my post to seem random; I just wanted to show that the question "does fun really die?" is a subjective one. From what I've seen, UChicago has something for everyone, including frat parties, so there's no reason to worry.

I was mostly referring to my posts, but such eccentricism is evident in various other posts.

Wha...? You're complaining about your own posts?

Too much time on cc makes me misinterpret things...I'd better go to bed!

Fun is what you make it.

Our students are told not to say "I like to get drunk at frat parties" during those panels. Remember, we're not just recruiting you, we're recruiting your parents .

Hi! I go to U of C, and no, fun does not really come to die there. It's intellectual in every aspect though, so your idea of fun really needs to match the school's atmosphere. Most people get really "wild" and venture downtown for a good time, but otherwise, there are lots of coffee shops, University Theater, activities, concerts, and such to attend. Plus, there's fraternity row, and that's always fun.

Hmm I have the same question as the person who began the thread. I heard that people go to frats for fun...how come I don't hear about mingling with the rest of Chicago like I do with Columbia and NYC? Chicago is such a cool place, how come U of C students don't go hang out there more often? Because I had a friend last year who was deciding between Chicago and Harvard. She did an overnight visit, and pretty much her host just asked if she wanted to go drinking at night.

Ok, a serious answer.

The only people who make a regular run of frat parties are people involved with Greek life, first-years, and to a lesser extent second-years. I know of very few third-and-fourth-year students who regularly go to frat parties. If your friend was overnighting she was probably in a dorm with few upperclassmen, who tend to go to the various bars around Hyde Park, e.g., The Pub or Jimmy's, go downtown, or throw their own parties in their own apartments.

That said, there's more "fun" to be had than just parties, so hopefully you're not conflating the two.

Fun does not die. I give flippant answers because it really is a stupid question -- do you honestly think people spend four years at Chicago and just study, study, study, then head off to frat parties to get blasted? Give us some credit.
