I’m currently a junior and I’m planning my AP selections for next year. This year I’m taking 4 AP classes: APUSH, AP Psychology, AP English Language and Composition, and AP Russian. I have an over 100 average. As a sophomore I took AP World History. In senior year i plan on taking AP Physics C Mechanics, AP Macro Economics, and AP Calculus. My school offers a Journalism class which incorporates both the Yearbook and School Newspaper in it. I’m not sure whether i should take this class and have only 3 AP classes or take AP Literature and have 4 AP classes. Personally I feel like i would enjoy the Journalism class more since Literature sounds boring to me and i already have an AP English class. I want to be a doctor so I don’t think Literature would be necessary anyways. But would selective colleges not like me taking one less course. My teachers claim that the Journalism class is just as rigorous as an AP but colleges wouldn’t know that. The teacher in charge of scheduling also told me have 8 APs and Yearbook on my resume would look just as good as 9 APs altogether. Does Yearbook really look that good?
If you want to be a doctor, why would you only take 1 AP science out of all your APs? Does your school offer Anatomy & Physiology, AP Bio, AP Chem?
I think that you are fine with 3 AP’s next year. Keep in mind that you will have that hidden class: college apps and essays. Rising seniors always underestimate the work that’s involved in preparing an application.
Also, since you already have AP English Language, there is no real reason to take AP English Literature. Many top private colleges do not give credit for both Lang and Lit.
It’s your call, but I do sort of agree with the previous poster; you might want to double up on AP Sciences in lieu of AP Macro. Also, if you’re school is stretching these courses over the course of a year, AP Mech and AP Macro are both one semester equivalents, so those classes should not be overly taxing. Again, your call; it really won’t move the admissions needle far one way or the other.
By the way, your teacher is right IMO. There is a law of diminishing returns ofter 6-8 AP’s over the course of your HS career. So 9 really is not “better” than 8. Good luck.
My school has AP Bio and AP Chem but my guidance counselor will definitely not let me double up on a science AP out of all of them. Also in my school Psychology is a science class. I chose Physics because I like it a lot and I’ll have to take them Bio and Chem again in college anyways. I know people say AP in those subjects will lead to less work in college but I don’t think it would make much of a difference. And I have to take at least one history course so Macro will be it. There’s also a lot of scheduling conflicts because I can’t drop a gym class and am in band.
but if AP Physics C Mech (which is the only AP Physics I can take) is equivalent to a one semester course then should I maybe take AP Bio or AP Chem instead?
Your teacher is right. The difference between 8 and 9 AP classes is very small to nil, especially if the ninth AP is Lit and you’ve already taken AP Lang. IMHO, Yearbook looks more interesting than an AP class.
Are you saying AP Physics C is only one semester at your high school? Almost all AP classes are equivalent to one semester college class. This goes for AP bio as well (don’t know about AP chem.)
Try to match your AP classes with your interests and current goals.
Well, there’s your answer. Make sure your GC mentions that on the Secondary School Report.
For med school, you will undoubtedly have to take all of them again in college, or more advanced coursework in the subject, regardless of which ones you took in HS. Many med schools do not accept AP science credit as fulfilling prereqs. Having said that, focus now on how to get into college, and worry about med school admissions later. ![]()
As skieurope said: include this on your “bragsheet” (“hoped to double up on science APs but not allowed by school policy”) and make sure your GC mentions it in your letter.
You’re right, Journalism will be better (sounds like you’ll enjoy it more, too).
Its the entire school year I guess I was just confused about how the credits are actually transferred haha my bad but would you guys know if AP bio would show more of an interest towards pre-med than AP physics would. I know you still need physics for pre med but still (btw one of my elecives is computer science its not AP though).
I’d avoid AP Lit if at all possible. It’s easily more work than all my other APs combined (none of them being “lite APs”+) and unless you’re into literature the content’s really not that interesting. You’ll have so much more time to actually put out solid applications to colleges you’ll want to go to and apply for scholarships.
