Does having published research look good on a college resume?

Hey...I have recently had my research published in an international science research journal. The journal is the International Journal for Scientific and Engineering Research. Is this a good journal? Does being published in a professional journal for the field of interest look good on a college app?

The paper is on my field of interest (media studies, international relations, psychology, economics, and political science). So being published help for admissions into MIT's undergraduate economics program? What about Wharton or Princeton's Woodrow Wilson School?

No, it looks horrible. Don’t include it under any circumstances.

Kidding, it obviously looks good. Put it as one of your EC’s on the common app.

Yeah, you just might want to mention it. BTW how come you don’t know the prestige level of the journal?

DO put it in your application.
it just shows that you had interest in research work and your had done some commendable work in the same as well

Haha thanks! I was asking about the prestige level because I find so many different impact factors for it yet at the the same time people say it is pretty prestigious…I’m just trying to see if being published might be a “hook.”

“Hook” is just a made up term people throw around and doesn’t mean anything to admissions staff. Yes, published research makes you look good because so few students do so. However, the IJSER is not highly regarded at all. It’s “impact factor” is a .4510 which is very low and ranked nearly last out of all the journals in its category.

what was it on?

couldnt agree more

It was on the effects of the right wing media on public knowledge of the affordable care act.
Thank you for your honest feedback Pancaked!

Doubt this will help much never heard of this journal and not that much information about it online. Undergrad students have a very hard time enough getting published…let alone a high school student. But who knows put it down anyway

It can’t hurt… it could be good if you tie it into your personal statement. Try not to go too far into your opinions though, you never know who is reading your apps.
