I’m going to ask my GC but it’s spring break now. On my transcript which I sent for summer programs there weren’t any ranks only grades. But we do have valedictorians. Does this mean that we have rankings?

I'm sure it's different at different schools.

I know with my school they don't do "rankings" but they give out the "valedictorian" rating to any and all students who keep a 4.0 unweighted gpa throughout high school (someone always does it in a high school of 3100). Sometimes we have as many as 10 "valedictorians", but since generally the kids at our school try so hard, the school doesn't want to taint kids by assigning rankings. For example, a 3.5 gpa student would probably rank around 500th or so here.

Also, weighted classes ironically have no effect on the valedictorian rating. Meaning a kid who gets all As in all regular classes gets valedictorian like the kid who took all honors classes and got all As, while the kid who got all As except for one B in all honors classes wouldn't get valedictorian.

So yes, you can have valedictorian without rankings.
