A kid in my HS last year had a 1.6 gpa and made it to multiple state schools....however i go to a very prestigious hs so i was wondering if that had to do with it? (lowest sats are like 2100)

A GPA of 1.6 on a 4.0 scale? That practically requires failing every course… High school prestige certainly means something, if you high school is nationally ranked. If it isn’t, you’re pretty much on a level plane as all other high schools.

I know that it can matter to some degree if the high school is well known to the university. There is very prestigious and very expensive high school in my area where kids with 3.4 GPAs are admitted into USC, 3.7 GPAs into UCLA, and 3.9 GPA into Yale. A friend that attends the school told me that the college counselor claims that attending the school “adds a .5 GPA boost” which, would make sense considering the lower GPA’s admitted into difficult colleges.

Hope that helps!

Your GC will submit a high school profile with your recommendation, so even if the college isn’t familiar with your high school, the admissions officers can get an idea of how competitive it is. The high school profile for my daughter’s school shows average ACT, average SAT, and GPAs in five different bands. The highest GPA is reported, and as a result a college can get an idea of where a particular student near the top stands, even though the school doesn’t rank.
