Does the high school you attend have any effect on college admissions? Clearly it wouldn't be some huge boost, but can it help a little? For example, I go to the top public school in my state. Will colleges recognize this, or are most high schools treated equally?

Colleges will look at your academic performance in the context of your high school. If you go to a very rigorous school, they will understand why you may have a less than ideal GPA. Inversely, they may know that a school is not as difficult and will take into account grade inflation.

Nonetheless, class rank in this situation is probably a more accurate indicator of how you perform at your school.

Sometimes, if you go to a super competitive school, your guidance counselor may have more influence in whether or not you get waitlisted or rejected. However, what is expected of you generally increases at more competitive schools, making it harder to shine.
