Does Hispanic Scholarship Fund’s YLI (Youth Leasdership Institute) apply to S’21?

My S’21 keeps receiving emails from the Hispanic Scholarship Fund encouraging him to apply for their summer YLI (Youth Leadership Institute) program at either the University of Chicago or USC’s location.

When I read about the program it seems (but maybe I’m wrong) that it is targeting first generation Hispanic students to help them learn more about the college application process, etc.

H earned MD and I earned a PhD so we are mindful of this college process (and I’ve been spending lots of time on CC the last couple years to learn more) but just want to make sure that it’s okay for us to have S’21 skip pursuing this. (I will have him apply if it is something he would benefit from, so just checking in here for some guidance!)

TIA for any feedback.

My son is also getting these emails and he is not first generation, I read the requirements and it doesn’t say it’s for first generation only.

So do you think you’ll have you son apply?
Hopefully, we’ll get some more responses. I’m curious about it but it would be a tight fit schedule wise IF he was to apply and IF he was to be accepted. ? But if it’s recommended, I’d have him apply for sure.

We are in the same situation, the dates are tight for us also. I hope someone that has attended replies so we know a little more about the program.

Same situation here. My daughter is interested. Husband has a Phd me a BA don’t want to apply for something not meant for her but my daughter is interested

I love that your daughter is Interested and clearly she’s not first generation college either…:so that’s encouraging.

I brought it up to my son again a few days ago and he was an adamant, “no, not interested”. So…I guess I give up on it.

I hope your kids are able to go if they end up wanting to do so. ?

The YLI is for rising seniors and is comprised of students from all walks of life. My daughter attended last year in Chicago, and it was a fantastic experience for her. She is still friends with the students who were in her “familia.” My girl HIGHLY recommends that interested students apply to the YLI. It definitely instilled in her an even deeper desire to serve and promote the Latinx community. It is an organization I think she will be involved with for life.
