I was accepted to the Hispanic Scholarship Fund Youth Leadership Institute program at the University of Chicago in early August. Does anyone have experience or knowledge of this program? I couldn’t find too much information online. I found about it via an email; I’m sure they got it from the College Board when I took the PSAT.
Is this considered impressive or noteworthy for colleges? As I understand it, the HSF is a legit and recognized nonprofit, rather than one of those spammy and marketing heavy for-profit companies. The program itself is completely free and covered by corporate sponsors and other private donors.
I kind of would like to go since visiting Chicago seems cool and this seems like it would be a good experience. However, I want to make sure it’s worth the visit before I commit.
I come from a small school where opportunities are limited, so I try to do outside things to make up for that. I think this might supplement my college application, but I’m not sure.
Here was the introduction paragraph to the email I just got:
“Congratulations, you have been accepted to participate in the 2015 Youth Leadership Institute! You have been hand-picked from a pool of more than 1,300 of the nation’s top Latino high school applicants, and now you will receive the practical tools you need to successfully apply to top universities, have full access to scholarship and financial aid opportunities, and set a course for academic and career success.”
I must respond within five days since there is a large wait list.
Yes you are right that this is a 501(3)C tax exempt nonprofit organization that is well known and respected, and not one of those spammy marketing orgs. However I don’t know anyone who has gone. It is free to participate so I would do it if you can. I don’t see it as a huge thing for college admissions in itself as it is going over how to apply and how to get scholarships more instead of learning or doing something academic. But I think you can personally get a lot out of it. If you go please report back.
@DrDinosaur@PromotesSleep did you guys confirm your attendance yet? I was accepted as well, and got assigned to the Marymount university one but I have some questions. I would really appreciate your responses!
I will also be attending in Chicago. Is anyone flying in long distance on Wednesday, like me, or flying in at all? if so, does anyone know if we get rides to the airport on Sunday?
@grlpwr I’m arriving Wednesday afternoon via flight. I’m leaving Monday morning. I think they’re pretty flexible. I’m expecting transportation will be provided. They take too long to respond though. I had to change my flight plan. They didn’t confirm my latest flight details are okay, but it’ll have to be okay.
I’m having the same problem with them not responding. I already sent them my flight itinerary like they asked but only for the flight on Wednesday. I wanted to ask them if it was okay for me to leave Monday morning before I bought the flight home.
@grlpwr They were answering great before, but not so much now. They said yes to a previous itinerary where I left on Monday. That, combined with the fact that I’m also leaving Monday, means it should be okay. Of course, it doesn’t hurt to ask, but time is running out.
I got an email telling me what to bring and preparations, but it has no information about transportation. It only says that they’ve assessed who need transportation. Anyone get transportation info yet?
@Iamquiteloud WHAT?? Wow! I’m going to the UChicago one so that’s in like two weeks, but can’t believe they haven’t sent you anything. I’ll wait to see if they send me anything and I’ll let you know. Let me know if you get something!
They already told me they can not afford to fly me out there. However, I can still attend. But they haven’t sent me any travel info either even though I’ve called but no ever answers…such a struggle. I am planning to arrive on Wednesday afternoon and hopefully leave Monday morning since it will cut my flight price in half rather than leave Sunday.
Does anyone know when we are suppose to be at UChicago or where at UChicago and what day is the actual event start on the 6th right?
@Owlman7 really? They told you through an email? I’m going to the UChicago one too, but they haven’t told me whether they could afford it or not. They have a lot of money from big coorporations, how can they not afford flights?
They just sent out an email recently with more details. I haven’t gotten a response back from my previous email trying to confirm my travel details in 11 days. The lack of response is frustrating. I just sent my details again to reply to this new email.
Hi, I recently got accepted to the one in Marymount university in Virginia and I haven’t received any information about my flight. I’m supposed to be leaving on Wednesday which is in three days and I have no idea why they haven’t given me any information. If I don’t receive it today or early tomorrow I’m ready to say that I can’t go because they are taking way to long.
