Does ignoring a fly in program nomination impact RD admission?

My ds (class of 2023) was nominated for a fly-in program. He did not complete the application for the program, but is still interested in the school. Can he still apply, or should he let it go, since he did not follow through with the fly in application? This is a highly selective school and will be a reach for him, but he is a strong student, so I think might stand a chance if he had not made a poor impression by dropping the ball on the fly in program. Is there something else he can do to demonstrate interest? He let the application go because he is worried about his fall schedule and conflicts.

What does he have to lose? Open every email from the school and click all the links, go to virtual sessions, etc. surely other kids may have had conflicts not to mention that plenty of people are still not flying due to Covid.

Thank you! So true. That is helpful.

I would call and see if they still have room and pretend it got caught up in the spam folder…

Wy didn’t he fill out the application for the fly-in?

I highly doubt that a student who is nominated for a fly in, but unable to take that opportunity, is penalized for that. There could be any number of reasons why they can’t make that commitment. Caring for siblings or family, work obligations, or other issues might make doing a fly in very difficult.

If your child is interested, there are other ways to show interest. He can sign up for emails and open them, attend virtual sessions, and even contact an admissions officer to EXPLAIN why he is unable to attend, even though he would like to. Those things show interest. He probably should say he was worried though. He can simply say while he is very interested and would love to visit if he had time, other commitments make it difficult.

Thank you. I will suggest that he write to admissions and let them know that he was sorry he was unable to apply. It would have been difficult for him to attend logistically. This is a helpful idea and will reduce his stress about looking disinterested.

Write a thank you for the offer, I am unable to attend at that time due to previous commitments but am still interested in (School) and can’t wait for the opportunity to connect in other ways letter.
