I will be transferring next year and I am considering applying to some state schools here as well as out of state. I want to try and get accepted to the best school out of my options. I was wondering what would happen if I didn’t go to that school. What if I got a good scholarship but that school is unknown? I want a school I like but I also want a school that people at least have a clue about. My friend graduated from Brown University with over $300,000 in debt and I am still at community college and am about to transfer. I feel the name might help her more than me but I am not sure. Do you think it matters were someone goes to for undergrad? Do you think they names of the schools matter or do the skills matter more?
It is hard to say. Sometimes a name can open a door in the job market. It matters more for some careers than others
What about in my career? My major is Computer Engineering.
You must be confused about the amount of debt your friend took on to graduate from Brown. I don’t think Brown is at 75k each year yet. Undergrads can’t borrow that much on their own. Your friend’s parents would have had to co-sign for that kind of money.
All that said, as a transfer what matters is internship and job placement, and reputation in your field. Communicate with the career centers at each campus, and with the Comp Eng departments about their job placement. Overall national name recognition doesn’t matter at all in your case - just the reputation for your major among the people who will be looking to hire.
Search. This question is debated endlessly. My view is that it does matter some, but probably not enough to justify a $300k price tag unless you’re trying to break into I-banking, management consulting, or private equity.
@happymomof1 she was at Brown for 8 years because of medical sick leave and stuff. Hence the huge debt sadly. The sad thing is because I don’t have my bachelors I think I might be limited as to what I can work in pertaining to the field or internships in that field. I have been self teaching myself a lot of skills. I have a computer network background since I was 11 but I have more stuff to learn. I’ll for sure try to ask them about it. Awesome. Thanks! I’ll for look into the reputations in my field for the my major. My counsler has only told me briefly about stuff like that but I’ll try and make an appointment and ask again.
