Does it cost money to take a gap year between high school and college?

I am accepted into college and am considering taking a gap year. Will it cost money?

Will that school defer and hold your spot?

A gap year is usually spent taking time to work and build income, or, to do a project that will help get you into more schools the following year.

NOTE: If you take any coursework at a CC, you would not be considered as a freshman applicant, in most places, and would not be eligible for freshman financial aid. Transfer aid is generally not very good.

I’m not sure what you mean.

I was admitted to my top choice school last spring, committed like any other student, and then deferred my admission for a year. Deferring did not cost anything. Will your school allow you to defer? Every school has different policies.

As far as financial aid, I am receiving only need-based aid (and a hefty amount of it lmao), and for my college they meet 100% need all four years, so deferring does not change much. As far as merit scholarships go, you need to contact your financial aid office directly to see if the scholarship would defer.

As far as what you do for your gap year, the options are limitless. I’ve known people who worked and people who have traveled. Obviously the people who spent a year working had a pretty decent sized bank account by the end of it (esp for a 19yo), but I’ve also talked to some people who went on expensive gap year programs that their parents paid for.

Personally, I am combining working and traveling (I think many people who travel end up doing this to some degree), so I’ve been working my ass off since I finished school last May and I will travel for the spring and summer using the money I earned.

Feel free to ask questions or provide more specifics for your situation

Most people who take one or more years off school between high school and college work, often to earn money to pay for college.

Ask the school if your financial aid package will still apply if you defer for a year. My daughter is taking a year between college and grad school (different situation, but there may be some similarities) and has to reapply for financial aid.

If you don’t get the same aid package, then yes, taking that gap year will cost you. But even if you get the same aid, you’ll still need to earn money to live, right? And if you want to travel during your gap year and your parents aren’t paying , then you’ll need to come up with the money yourself, so again, a gap year will cost you.
