Does it matter what school you go to?

I’m going to major in some buisness feild but not sure yet likely accounting or finance. There are 3 universities in my area that offer these degrees but some are better then others. I read that some places won’t even interview unless you came from a good buisness school. The 3 schools are Spring Hill College, South Alabama, and the University of Mobile. Appreciate it. Roll Tide

There are two separate issues:

  • for IB/consulting, some firms will only recruit from specific “target” or “semi target” schools. Those would be for instance Ivies, Williams, Amherst, Wellesley, Georgetown, Colgate, Middlebury.
  • some firms recruit only on some campuses and alumni networks aren’t similarly strong everywhere.

That being said, none of these three is a target and all three universities are roughly at the same level when it comes to alumni networks, with perhaps a nod to Spring Hill College.

Finance requires a stronger level in math (calculus 1-2, sometimes calculus-based statistics or linear algebra…)

What are your stats?
Did you apply to UAlabama (Tuscaloosa)?
Are you committed to staying in Alabama or will you consider colleges located in neighboring states?

I’m not familiar enough with the schools you are look at to give an informed opinion as to which may be best, but where you go to school can be important. For example in accounting the Big 4 firms do not recruit at every college and at some colleges an applicant would need an extremely high GPA to even get an interview.

I would suggest that you try to contact the career placement offices at these colleges and ask what firms recruit there, is there a GPA cutoff to interview with the top firms etc.
