Does it matter?

Hey does it matter if I take the ap test without the ap class? How much does the class count as opposed taking the test on your own?Or it doesn't really matter as long I do well on the ap test?

The grade in the class, and the score on the exam serve two different purposes:

For college admissions purposes, what matters is that you have taken a tough class and earned a good grade in that class.

If the college awards credit or placement based on the exam score, what matters is the exam score.

Yes, you can self-report an AP score when you apply for admissions, but you will not send official information about your score until you have been accepted and have committed to a college, and you’ll do that if you know that you will get credit or placement for that score.

You can certainly do that. The advantage of taking the AP class is that you are well prepared for the test and it shows rigor in your schedule (due to the fact that is what your grade in the course is based on, more hw than regular classes, ect) That said you can definitely take the AP test on your own. That is what I did for AP US History (it wasn’t offered to me as a sophomore at that time). I did well and got a 5 and college credit. The benefit is that it shows initiative and you can get college credit. However it does not as weighted as heavily as other portions of your application, as AP scores are used mostly for placement, but it shows you are taking advantage of your resources and you’ve really mastered the material.

I would only recommend the above if a) the course isn’t offered at your school or you can’t fit it in your schedule or b) you think you can do really well in it while juggling the other portions of your high school life. As I mentioned earlier, it is mostly to your own benefit. For something like AP Lang/Lit, for example, you can certainly take the AP test on your own and easily get credit, but for those I think they are looking more towards the rigor of the english class (as those classes cover alot of material)

Good luck!

So what your telling me is that the ap “class” is a bonus and counts as a separate compartment? The reason why I am asking this is because there are ap classes that were removed due to budget cuts like biology and many language ap’s.Plus the some ap test I want to take are not available in my school like computer science or a language ap. I dont really like the current ap classes that are offered(Other than ap world history class). I plan to take ap macro,ap micro, computer science, and world history.

The AP “class” isn’t any bonus whatsoever. If you take an AP test and you get a 5, regardless of whether you took a class for it or not, it’s still a 5 and that’s equally impressive. Take as many AP tests you want without the class as long as your school doesn’t provide it or it can’t fit into your schedule, otherwise, you’ll just look lazy and that you didn’t want to put in the effort for the class. Hope that clears it up a little bit.
