I know that you go to college to study, but is that all you have time to do? Is the only way to do well is to study 24/7, or is there a good balance most students find when it comes to doing WELL and going to parties, sports games, and involvement in clubs?

D stated, “It’s a good balance.”

Actually, it is NOT a good idea to study 24/7. You are there to develop as a person also. Awesome academic stand is just one side of the story. Having great college experience will affect the rest of your life a lot. People have minors in theri personal area of interest, have jobs, volunteer, do research, participate in Greek (very big at Miami), cheer for their favorite hockey team (sorry, football is just not on the same standing), participate in sport (including non-varsity clubs, there are many) travel abroad and go to bars on a weekend. Put it in priority order, mange your time effectively.

It is quite possible to do well academically at Miami AND maintain a great social life. My son just graduated last Spring…absolutely loved his 4 years at MU. He graduated with a 3.85 GPA while earning a double major (finance & accounting). He traveled the world through Miami’s programs…Kenya, China, Argentina & New Zealand. He joined a frat during his soph year…I am sure it was a great decision for him. He is now sharing an apartment in Chicago (Lincoln Park) with two of his frat brothers, after accepting an offer as a financial consultant.

In my opinion, Miami is an absolutely fantastic school…

^My D. also went to New Zealand. Yes, Miami is awesome, D. misses it and visits frequently. She is all of pre-med friends are currently at Med. Schools.

College is a delicate balance. It is really important to learn time management and prioritization. It is best to adoopt a work hard/play hard attitude.

I have known people that go out 3/4 days a week and still get good grades.
I have know other people that go out 1/2 days a week and struggle with their grades.
It a matter of a few different things

Major- certain majors especially engineering, math, sciences are more time intensive and overall more difficult

Time management & efficiency- how efficient does your kid use their time- sleep all day, facebook instead of really studying- i suggest they just go to the library

Intelligence/ ability

Extracurricular activities/jobs- they also take time especially when you are in leadership positions

It honestly all depends on how motivated you are as a person. As a freshman here, I have found a great balance and am doing very well in my classes and go out 3-4 times a week. If you do your work in advance and motivate yourself to study and not procrastinate, you can have a great social life. The key is balance and once you get into a groove, getting good grades and having a really good social life will be possible. I love the academics and the social aspects of Miami so much, the classes are great and the party scene here is insane. Good luck deciding!
(and you DEFINITELY don’t have to study 24/7 here to do well unless you take really, really hard classes)
