Does Legacy help?

I believe you’re not technically a legacy, but I’m sure it would be considered. In general, Columbia doesn’t give legacies as much preference at other schools. While legacy admissions rates aren’t released, less than 5% of the students (i.e. about 50 students each year, out of a little over 1,000 students in each class) at Columbia College are legacies. That tells you the legacy acceptance rate is probably much higher for legacies than non-legacies. Princeton, on the other hand, has a legacy acceptance rate of over 40%!

the legacy thing is unfair, yes.

that’s why there’s affirmative action to compensate, although asians are ****ed in the process lol.

my opinion? remove BOTH policies. there’s a list somewhere that CU publishes (and shows off) of the admitted students in the class of 2012 who are legacies complete with eir parents’ names

Yeah, and it’s a pretty small number of students. It’s like 5% of the students at CC and anecdotally, I can’t tell the difference between legacy students and non-legacy students. I’m sure almost all the legacies would be admitted even if they weren’t legacies. Columbia’s not Princeton.
