Does MIT care a lot about freshman grades?

I've gotten a few B's in my Freshman year, and a few in my sophomore year, but if I make good grades for my Junior and Early Senior years, will those offset those?

It has been stated many times in these forums that you do not have to have all “A”'s or a 4.0 GPA to be considered (and accepted). However, grade improvement through HS is a plus.

I got into MIT early with a low C on my high school transcript, and in my junior year no less. I had taken typing in my HS’s vocational program, and I just wasn’t as good at it as those who were going on to secretarial school.

I found out later that some of the other parents thought that mine were terribly irresponsible in allowing me to take typing on my High School record, rather than in summer school or some other time, when there wouldn’t be a difficult grade to have to explain. But I use a keyboard every single day, both in my personal and my professional life and I am very, very grateful that I learned my way around a keyboard in high school.

MIT clearly looked not only at my GPA number, but also most definitely at how it was achieved. The important thing is not to get strung out about grades. A teacher’s LoR describing you as “grade grubbing” is clearly an application killer. Just relax and enjoy high school as much as possible.
