i tend to mellow out over the summer :) is it 'frowned upon' to have no summer activities whatsoever?

I'd try to find a balance between the two extremes. You shouldn't feel the need to fill every single minute of your summer with something meaningful, but doing absolutely nothing might not be the best idea. Be creative - find something that's worthwhile but also fun. If you want to watch TV all summer, at least build your own TV out of spare refrigerator parts. ;-)

that seems reasonable, it's just that i do spend evey single minute during the year doing activities (which i have filled and then some) that i kind of burn out by summer, the fact that i'm always on vacation during the summer doesn't help either... pretty much all i do is tv and violin lol

Last summer I went to NJ Governor's School for a month, but for all the summers before that, the only activities I ever had were a week of field hockey camp here and there. Of course, preseason starts in mid-August, so that cut into my summer too. But I never went out and tried to go to math camp or anything. Yuck. (No offense to math campers, it's just not my thing...)
