Does my Dartmouth essay have to be about me?

The prompt is : “Its not easy being green” was a frequent lament of Kermit the frog. discuss

im pretty happy with what i came up with

but in hindsight, i note that all the other prompts explicitly ask for some personal insight as well

my Kermit essay is completely impersonal;I thought i could just get creative with it (think UChicago extended questions)
the prompt didnt say anything about talking about yourself so i thought i didnt have to

am i approaching this the wrong way?

The point if the essay is to show them more about you. Not your writing skills, but more of a revealing look at your personality. To make you 3D instead of just the 2D feel of the Common App. To show that you are interested and interesting. So in some way the essay should be about you.

I can readily imagine essays that are not about you as such but that would nonetheless reveal a lot about you in terms of, say, sense of humor, belief in equal treatment for all colors, and so forth. It’s hard to answer your question in a vacuum, but I would not categorically say that is has to be about you. In fact, I think it’s just as likely that this prompt was included for those applicants who did not want to talk about themselves directly.

thank you!
